I really like Snook Haven, however, if you are looking for fast service...you might want to stay clear. They tend to be very slow!! The other thing that was a huge disappoint was that when we sat down the waitress came to tell us that they did not have several things that are listed on the menu. The menu is not that big...so missing things really narrows your options. The biggest disappointment of all was that they did not have gator bites!....the primary reason we came there. My grandsons love gator bites and it is the only close restaurant that offers them...and oooonooooo they did not have any! We ate optional items anyway...it was hard to convince the kids to stay, but we did and food is mediocre at best. My fish was overcooked. The onion sticks were reallllly greasy and I thought they served homemade chips, but the chips were a cheap wavy chip. My husband had blackened tilapia he seemed to enjoy. Son's shrimp looked good and he didn't complain. French fries were seasoned and were good. The atmosphere and area is absolutely worth the trip. An old fish camp with a very rustic feel, enjoyed that immensely! We will go there again, prices are resonable, however I will call ahead to make sure they are serving gator bites before we head out. All and all the food is ok, wait time is long and when you can get the gator bites they are good. Our waitress was great and apoligized for the wait. Probably not for everybody if you are looking for 4 stars, not hardly. But if you like sitting outside and enjoying scenary you will find it enjoyable. We do...but sure did miss the gator bites!
It has been many years since I've been to Snook Haven. I was on the Myakka River with a friend from Austria. And when I motored past, we decided to tie up at their dock and have a late lunch. Ewald is quite particular about healthy food. But Wendy the bar tender talked him into trying their gator bites with myakka chips. I was a little surprised. I had their big cheese burger which went down well with my two drafts. As others have pointed out, this is simple American food prepared well and fresh. It comes out the way they pride themselves. This was a very nice warm and sunny Florida winter day near 80. And we spent 4 hours on the river so far. So the good simple fare was perfect. The menu has a good selection of fish, pulled pork fried okra ... for example. Nothing is pre-cooked.
They had a banjo band inside today. There are bands almost everyday, one around noon and one in the evening. Almost all the outdoor tables were taken, and the inside as well. Several groups from their tour boat trips were there. Some were eating after a tour and other before. The boat skipper Captain Terry ordered something to take out at the bar where we sat. Guess another tour will start soon. You can usually see gators on these tours. You can also rent canoes and kayaks. We were in a small fishing boat which is only a foot above the water. So we got a real close look, see pictures http://www.yelp.com/bi... .
Snook Haven is a delightful and fun experience. Their theme is the alligator http://www.yelp.com/bi.... A genuine and unique Florida experience which cannot be replicated!
SNOOK HAVEN MADE US FEEL WEKCOME FROM THE OUTSET
THE FOOD WAS GREAT AS WELL AS THE SERVICE!
WE ARRIVED RIGHT AT 11:00 AM AND WERE EARLIER THAN EXPECTED AND HAD NO PROBLEM FOR SELECTING A TABLE OF CHOICE AND WAIT FOR THE REST OF OUR PARTY TO SHOW UP @ NOON.
RECOMENDED WITH HIGH MARKS! GO THERE AND RELAX WITH YOUR FRIENDS ... YOU WILL LICK YOUR FINGERS FOR SURE ... MOST OF US HAD GRILLED SHRIMP SOME THE CATFISH YUM IS THE WORD!
If you are looking for linen napkins this is not the place for you. But if you can 'settle' for good food and friendly service you should have a good time here. Reasonably good selection of beer and wine. There was a very good jazz combo playing the night we were there. It was a busy Friday evening and sitting out by the river was pleasant. We can vouch for the pulled pork and fish and chips. And try the lobster bisque. Good stuff.
We have been coming to Snook Haven for years, and until recently have been very pleased. Yesterday 10/23/11 Sunday they had a great band, very talented people and put on a great show. We were sitting out in front and noticed none of the usual waitresses were there. after an hour with no service we went inside and ordered there. The bar manager was there, she is always on the ball and has been giving us great and friendly service for years. After getting our drinks we told her about the no service outside & we tried to order some home made potato chips but were told they were out of them. We had several friends meet us and we were all sitting at the table together. Three more hours went by and not one waitress ever even came by. A total of 4 hours with absolutely no service. Again the inside people, especially the bar manager were great, but no outside service for 4 solid hours. I noticed a manager and he seemed very concerned that when the band took a short break there was no background music but was ablivious that we were not getting any service. I don't understand the new priorities. The food quality has gone way down, there is fewer choices and prices have gone up.The lobster bisque used to be delicious, now its watered down & costs more any you can't even get it 1/2 the time. I rate the service as one star because there was no service to rate.
