Gramma Dot's Seaside Saloon
Generations ago Gramma Dot fell in love with Sanibel Island. Today, her award-winning restaurant Gramma Dot's Seaside Saloon is one of the most raved about on the island. Located on the water at Sanibel Marina, you can eat inside or outside. Their seafood Caesar salad is famous, as are the gourmet Marina burgers, homemade chips, and grouper. Start with seafood chowder, and finish with a homemade dessert. Beer and wine are served. A children's menu is available. Reservations are not accepted, but call ahead to order live Maine lobster.
Gave Grandma Dots two tries two different trips because friends go every year and love it...and won't be returning. The food was pretty good for a lunch menu - limited but fresh, hot (food AND the location in summer) but the dining experience itself was uncomfortable. Be warned about taking kids and ordering soft drinks - NO refills and it was served in a little plastic cup full of ice. In all fairness, it is stated on the menu that there's no soda refills (you get charged more than the cost of a 2-liter for each one) BUT our first waitress ignored that and brought several soda refills for everyone without being asked. The next trip (had to drag my husband back), had a different waitress, no one got refills (not without paying again) and couldn't even get water refills. My recommendation - take your own drinks in and enjoy the grouper basket.
Gramma Dots is a great getaway for fresh fish and all around good food. You have to try the best key lime pie for dessert. It's a good place to people watch and also watch the yachts coming in. Always a tropical warm breeze and friendly wait staff. Can't wait to go back!!
While your on Sanibel you may hear people talk about how they like Grandma Dots. Personally, I've never understood why. I can't say I dislike it, but on an island with so much to offer in the way of food, Grandma Dots is bairly a blip on my radar. The food selection and quality is average. And god forbid you go during the summer, unless you don't mind sweating over your food (open air = no a/c). Sure it's located at the marina. Go take a look at the boats if you wish, but for goodness sake don't waste one of your nights out.
Great Location.. We visit Sanibel every year for a week.. and find ourslves at Dot's at least three times !!! Beer abd Peel n eat at lunch... sword fish at dinner ... Grouper is outstanding...
We think about it all year til we get there.
