Crab Shack (The)
The Crab Shack (and it truly is a shack!) serves up good, plainly cooked seafood, not on a white tablecloth but on oilcloth with plenty of extra utensils to get you cracking, picking and fishing meat out of shells. There is serious seafood-eating going on here, and shellfish fans make a beeline to this spot when the crab craving hits. You choose from seasonal entrees, Smoked Mullet or Salmon if you're not up for the crab cracking effort. Iced tea and beer are the favored options.
Lousy is a compliment. oysters were awful, no flavor and were pre-shucked, so nothing fresh there... clams were crushed and nearly impossible to eat... waitress gave me a popsicle stick to try to negotiate the food ... ugh.
Fried shrimp was excellent. Early bird specials are a great bargain. Blue crabs were very good also. Two pounds of mussels were very good and a great deal also. Stay away from the clams...very small and not much flavor.
This was our first visit to St Petersburg. We were looking for a good local Seafood Restaurant. Saw the reviews for Crab Shack and decided to try it. The food was really great and the staff was very friendly. We will go back the next time we visit St Petersburg.
It really does look like a shack and when we saw the place we debated about even going inside. I'm sure glad that we did. This was the BEST seafood in the area. We went during the lunch hour and it was packed. We knew the place must be good since it was so busy. The waitress was very friendly and prompt. The interior was a lot nicer and cleaner than the exterior appears. Try the peel and eat shrimp if you go there... they're awesome!
I'm the type of person who prefers a bit of personal space when dining, but when this place is busy you'll end up with strangers at your picnic table. and it's busy often because the fish dishes are always excellent - red snapper and grouper are my usual choices. Fried shrimp are recommended, too. It really is a shack, but who cares when the food is good. Trappman's market next door is the place to get some fresh-caught fish and crab for your next meal at home.
