Bern's Steak House
Owner David Laxer carries on the tradition of excellence begun by his father Bern more than 40 years ago. Beef connoisseurs should make this restaurant first on their list of culinary stops. Known for its large selection of melt-in-your mouth aged beef, it is easy to see why it has won a wall full of awards. The putting on the ritz crowd have some 25 types of caviar to ponder and a wine cellar that pushed one half million bottles.
My all-time fave on this planet (so far)! Wonderful food and ambiance (but be sure have a reservation!!!) The tour of the kitchen and the wine cellar were great! Then ontoWaugh's Dessert Room - Hedon found!
A lot of people say Bern's is overpriced. I completely disagree...if you were just getting the steak, that would be one thing, but you are getting a LOT of food for your money...I usually get a 6 oz filet, which comes w/ french onion soup, a really good salad (not just lettuce & tomato), a big baked potato, and three sides (almond carrots, zucchini, and french fried onions)...I cannot come close to finishing all my food...that runs about $29. Thicker steaks would cost more.
The atmosphere is fun...it can be quite loud on the weekends, but the smaller rooms help to cut down on the noise...the servers have always been polite to us and unpretentious...maybe we've just been lucky but I think we have been there at least 10 times in the last 3 years. not one bad experience.
the kitchen tour is pretty fun, but obviously the dessert room is great. desserts are all around $10 or so, but they're excellent. even old fallbacks like tiramisu are totally new & interesting. we are taking a group of friends there this weekend just because we know what a great experience it is. would definitely recommend!!!
I went recently with my office staff and watched as 10 straight people ordered the filet mignon. Since I'm not a steak person, I had salmon. The texture was ok and the flavor was in between good and great, but not fantastic. The worst part of my meal was that my dinner companions wouldn't shut up about how wonderful the steaks were. (That will teach me to eat with co-workers) The atmosphere was elegant, the sides were spectacular, and the desserts and wine selections were second to none. If you like steak, and are looking for a mostly formal meal, this is the place for you.
Please. Save your money. I have eaten here three times, and fortuantely did not have to pay for it. It's a great atmosphere, but the food is by FAR over rated and not worth the price. Dinner here comes with a very hefty price tag, which would be fine if the food justified it, but it absolutely does not. The steak tastes like the metal grill it was cooked on, and the veggies and other items on the plate tatsted the same. No way is this place worth what you pay. Go to Charleys Steak House for a fabulous steak and first class atmosphere.
This is one of the Tampa traditions that has to be experienced at least once in your life. The food is exquisite, the ambiance is out of this world, and the service is impeccable. The prices DO reflect this, but for special occasions, or for those who can afford to go alot, the time and the price is well worth it. Do not miss the desert room ...
