Bern's Steak House
Owner David Laxer carries on the tradition of excellence begun by his father Bern more than 40 years ago. Beef connoisseurs should make this restaurant first on their list of culinary stops. Known for its large selection of melt-in-your mouth aged beef, it is easy to see why it has won a wall full of awards. The putting on the ritz crowd have some 25 types of caviar to ponder and a wine cellar that pushed one half million bottles.
I was there for a business dinner on a week night with about 6 colleagues and clients. Our reservation was at 7 PM but, due to some of the worst service I've ever experienced, we did not even get our main course order taken until 8:30 PM. Furthermore, we were not provided with any bread or appetizers during that time either -- simply had wine pushed on us. In defense of the restaurant, I think we just had a disgruntled waiter, because I had heard other tables were treated better that same night.
The food was very good, but not as good as I expected given the price. For the same price and selection, I think the Capital Grille would be a better option.
The kitchen and wine cellar tour after dinner was extremely interesting. I would definitely recommend saving time for that. Also, the desert was quite good.
All in all, it was a five-hour dining experience that should have only taken about 2.5 hours.
The inside looks like a bordello- red velvet, gold everywhere, very garish.
Dark. Very, very dusty. A faint smell of mildew- my allergies went nuts.
The food is ok, but the atmosphere killed it for me.
Took WAY TOO LONG to eat- I'd forgotten my previous life by the time we got out of there. Course after course, dear god. The wine from 1972 reminded me of my grandma's basement. In 1972. Mildewy, not ok.
The pseudo gourmand smobs I was with pretended to like it, but it should have been sent back. I don't get it.
Well..what an eye opener. I was pretty excited to eat at Bern's. I was with my wife, away from the kids for some quality time. After digging in to the rubber steak and the rubber lobster (my wife turned red and looked like she was going to pass out), we decided it was time to leave. Only 2 good things happened, I ate for free because I received a gift card to go there (over $200 dollars), and we enjoyed the waiter. Other than that, when we walked into the entrance and the dark corridors, for a minute there I thought I was at Busch Gardens Halloween Horror Night. It was a pure joke. Folks, don't waste your time there.....save yourself some money and unnecessary heartburn and eat elsewhere!
Bern's is my favorite restaurant in the world! I've traveled all over the world, eaten at some of the highest rated restaurants in Paris, London, New York, LA and elsewhere, and I can say without a doubt, that Bern's is undeniably the best at what they do. From the extensive collection of wines, to the incredible beef (hint: order the Chateaubriand!), to the side dishes, the incredible tableside prepared Caesar Salad (lettuce at room temperature - what a concept!!), and the wonderful dessert rooms, it is a truly enjoyable dining experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
