In 1990, I first came to Tampa to visit a friend who's studio was on 7th Street in Ybor City. She took me to the Tropicana for lunch and I've been coming back to Tampa ever since. It's the first place I eat as I get off the plane and the last place when I leave and I eat there just about every day I am in town. The Tropicana is a long established local Cuban restaurant that has been visited by presidents and favored by the locals. A breakfast and lunch place where you get the best of Cuban dishes, fresh made, served fast by veteran servers who make it a point to remember your name and where you are from. Bobby, the handsome and genial host, whose family still lives in Hoguin, Cuba, is always happy to see you. Try the Spanish soup made with garbanzo beans, potatoes, and sausage. I've never had a bad meal there in 21 years. All their bread and sweets are baked fresh the night before by the local Cuban bakery and it shows. Try the Cuban bread smothered in cheese or the Egg Cuban for breakfast. Chicken parmesan sandwich is to die for. Very generous portions so much that I often take half home for another meal. Bread pudding....fantastic! Mango turnovers so fresh they should be arrested for selling them. Don't let the fast food utensils fool you....that's so you can get your food nice and hot straight out of the kitchen! I always feel that I'm coming home when I walk into the Tropicana. If you come to Tampa and don't visit the family of folks at the Tropicana, you are missing out on a unique local tradition which you, in turn, will reccommend to your friends and family..
