The first time I found Canton and the Famous Canton Steak was in 1981. What I found was revolutionary in Chinese cuisine, at the time. I continued to enjoy this restaurant for many years, until a change of address made it impossible. Before leaving the area in 2003, I had my last fix and went on my way. I recently returned to the area and wanted to get back to what used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in Miami. As I always have, I ordered the Canton steak and much to my surprise found one of the toughest most disappointing meals, I've had in many years. This famous steak is supposed to come with Chinese vegetables. Since when are zucchini and carrots, Chinese vegetables? The sauce which had always been a very tasty brown Cantonese sauce was rather tasteless and it was more grey in color than brown, not to mention the enormous amount of gristle, which was also a first. The special fried rice, which was one of the most impressive in town was also tasteless and it may have something to do with the fact that they don't even offer normal soy sauce, only the light version. They no longer offer white pepper only black. This restaurant which was almost impossible to get into due to the line outside was remarkably empty and for good reason. After 30 years, this restaurant isn't even the shadow of what it used to be. Unfortunately and with much regret, I report to you that it is barely up to the quality of a low end buffet. How sad for those of us who loved the place. Sadly, this will be the last time I go. This much of a drop in quality, usually makes for a very scary situation in the kitchen. I did not take a peak, only because of the terrible disapointment in quality.
