On Sept. 19, 1992, Blue Heaven Restaurant cooked and served black beans, rice and fish to its first lunch customers on painted picnic tables under a tropical almond tree in its outdoor dining area in Florida. The outdoor courtyard is paved with the slate pool table tops from the days the downstairs of the building operated as a billiard hall and ice cream parlor. A dance hall, a bordello and a playhouse have occupied the second floor of the restaurant s location. Breakfast items include pancakes, seafood and lobster benedict, granola, omelettes, fruit cups and a la carte items. Lunch items include soups, salads, sandwiches, fish, tortillas, vegetable plates, cheese steak and desserts. Dinner items include a variety of appetizers, shrimp, chicken dinners, pork tenderloin, New York strip steak, tuna, dolphin, beef tenderloin and desserts. The restaurant also has catering and banquet menus available. Blue Heaven Restaurant is located in Key West, Fla.
My friend and I went to Blue Heaven for breakfast on Monday, March 3rd, 2008. After reading several outstanding reviews, my friend enthusiastically suggested we go there for breakfast. Upon arriving, we were told that the wait would be 45 minutes to an hour. That was okay. We weren't in any hurry and that gave us a chance to briefly browse their store after which, we sat at the bar for a drink. At $8.00 the bloody Mary was pricey, but it was spicy and flavorful which added to the pleasure of waiting for breakfast.
The ambiance was comfortable and laid back, and waiting nearly an hour was not the least bit unpleasant. We felt waiting that long was a good omen to a to breakfast to remember. Our name was called and the hostesses were very friendly and gracious.
We were seated and handed our menus, and quite honestly, there wasn't much to read. There was the collection of Benedicts, some omelettes, fruit, granola and yogurt, some breakfast sandwiches and besides the shrimp and grits, the rooster special and the breakfast tortilla, the only things left on the menu were the side orders and drinks.
I ordered the breakfast tortilla which consisted of scrambled eggs with tomatoes, peppers and onions laid to rest on an open-faced flour tortilla. The serving size seemed small considering I arrived hungry then waited an hour, and quite honestly; it wasn't much different than something I might throw together at home last minute while rushing off to work. Why wait an hour for that?
The coffee smelled fantastic from a far and was very, very good while drinking. However, I waited nearly 10 minutes to get my refill after the waiter offered me one. It was almost lunch time and they didn't seem busy, but I kept waiting for my refill. Finally I had to request a refill from the waiter who apologized and materialized within seconds with the pot of coffee.
I'm rating my breakfast at Blue Heaven with 2 stars. It was a disappointing breakfast after a long wait. And bottom line, I went there to check out the breakfast that got such rave reviews.
Had I gone there looking for the Blue Heaven 'experience' (a casual drink, relaxed conversation with a friend, nice ambiance and gracious hostesses) I would rate my review with 4 stars, losing one star only to the forgetful waiter and the small-for-the-price, uninspired breakfast tortilla.
Went to the Blue Heaven between February 12, 2008 and February 20, 2008. I have eaten Breakfast only there.
This is my sixth time to Key West. This time I ate at the Blue Heaven three times. I must admit it is a bit pricy but you have to consider it is a small place and everything is made fresh and to order. They have several Benedicts that are outstanding. I particularly like the “Surf & Turf Benedict”. The menu is varied and everything is delicious.
Eating at the Blue Heaven is an experience! If you are going for breakfast try and get there as close to opening (8am) as possible. If you sleep in then you can expect to wait for a table. This is not the worst thing that can happen to you though. Go to the bar and order a Bloody Mary or Mimosa.
Eating at the Blue Heaven is a Key West experience you must try. The surroundings, food, drink, people, and goings on make it a super way to start your day.
This may sound redundant but my wife and I feel that this may have been one of the best meals we have ever had dining out!!! The color and character, the casual nature, you get lulled into thinking it will be an enjoyable evening with an OK meal.... What a fantastic surprise.... Brandon, our server, was exceptional, great with suggestions, always at the ready. Scott the gm, was busy helping bus tables and stopping by to check and see if all was well. As good as all that was, it was the food that was spectacular. From the scallops appetizer to the key lime pie (with 6 inches of meringue) this was a 12 out of 10!! It is a must visit...BTW, we found it well within reasonable pricing for a restaurant of this caliber!!!
My husband and I ate here 3 times on our trip to Key West. Twice for breakfast, once for dinner.
Quite simply, this was the best place for breakfast that we found. I had the eggs benedict and then a ham and cheese omelette. Most definetly the eggs benedict was the best.
We went there on a Monday night for dinner and our server, Wendy, was great. My husband went with the jerk shrimp and I had the surf and turf which consisted of jerk shrimp and a 10 oz. filet. Everything was amazing. It was one of the best filet's I have ever had and the shrimp was beyond compare. Even the corn was delightful, full of flavor and extremely fresh. For dessert we had Key Lime Pie and Banana Heaven. Do not pass up Banan Heaven. The name says it all. Warm homemade banana bread, with ice cream and caramel. It was outstanding.
This place is definetly on the expensive side. Also, you can tell the people that are a little fussy. I loved to sit outside and watch the shocked people when the first chicken squawked by. Truly priceless.
Definetly save this for a weeknight so that you can savour and enjoy without being rushed. It is not to be missed.
I can see Blue Heaven as I write this . . . it's our neighborhood restaurant. BUT, with a difference. I can smell the aroma of dinner wafting my way, and I can hear happy people dining.
Whenever anyone comes to visit . . . be they children with picky tastes or world-wise gourmets . . . I will take them to Blue Heaven because I know everyone will have that delightful combination of unique ambiance and outstanding food.
Fresh ingredients, creative menus, superb staff, ethical owners, environmental care, all add up to something special.
