First opened in 1909, this restaurant is looking toward the full century mark and gives every appearance of coasting right up to that date and well beyond. Start the day with a build-your-own omelet and home fries, or homemade granola for the healthy set. Lunch choices include a variety of sandwiches and soups. Nightly specials include Maine lobster on Tuesday and prime rib on Saturday. A Thanksgiving dinner can be enjoyed every Thursday. You can dine outside on a garden patio in lovely tropical surroundings or inside in air-conditioned comfort.
Excellent atmosphere with a great staff. It may look like a shack from the outside but once you step inside its a different place. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to our expectations. According to the framed certificate in our booth, the chili is award winning, but we found it to be far too mild and uninspired. If you like your chili made with ground beef with heavy overtones of green pepper, this is the bowl for you. I did like the way the chef melted the grated cheese with a torch similar to french onion soup. That was a nice touch. Our waitress recommended the cucumber/dill dressing as the house specialty. As with the chili, it lacked flavor. My wife tried the homemade ranch and came to the same conclusion. The salad that was under the dressing was fresh, crispy and contained a variety of vegetables. In fairness to Pepe's, we both prefer very spicy dishes with lots of flavor, so our comments on the chili and salad dressings should be considered accordingly. I ordered the meat loaf special but it was sold out. If they had another serving of the meat loaf, this review may have been different since the filet mignon I ordered as a substitute was seriously overdone. However, my wife's bbq chicken was moist and flavorful. Our comments on Pepe's desserts is limited to our observing the folks at the next table. From their comments we decided to begin with dessert on our next visit. Almost as an afterthought, Pepe's cole slaw is the best I've ever tasted. Overall, a mixed bag. Not what we expected, but we're certainly going to give it another try on our next trip; starting with dessert.
I have lived in Key West for 22 years. Pepes is by far the best restaurant on the island. Breakfast is excellent, fresh squeezed juice with cocktails, esp mimosas. Ray is my favorate server. Never had anything but wonderful food there.
Pepe's is a great place to eat and hang out. The outside is not in-your-face inviting, but inside it's like you've discovered a treasure. Breakfast is a treat here, as are lunch and late dining. Known for great food, conch atmosphere, tropical settings, ice in the urinal (really), and a friendly staff. Off hours are best for quick seating, but don't be in a hurry to eat. Each dish is individually prepared and worth the wait. Have a drink and relax. I've been coming to Pepe's for years, and recommend it always.
Pepe's is one of the oldest restaurants in KW.. I tell you I had been going to KW for yearssss and didn't realize this place was even a place.. ahahah The weathered building front is very old.. inside its a great dinnind atmosphere, nice little bar with in and outside dinning.. We like it there. We try to get there for breakfast before we get out of town.. great coffee.. although dinner is good as well. Again in season... and weekends any place can get crowded fast so.. if your not on KW time and you don't want to wait, visit it on off hours of the day...
We love Chock full of nuts coffee and know they serve it. We was served dead tired old coffee! We are not ones to skimp on food or restaurant prices (we normally eat at Louies back yard , Blue Heaven A&B lobstwer house just to give you an idea) and we wer really surprised at the price for breakfast! Way high!
So OLD BURNT COFFEE, high prices we say skip it!
We will not be back
we happened to walk by after our sunset cruise and grab the last table available. the waitress was very friendly and used to live in our area.
the menu at dinner is somewhat limited. i was only looking for a sandwich, but had to order a huge meal instead (i decided not to get the famed steak smothered in pork chops). thursdays is thanksgiving thursday there- their special thanksgiving turkey with all the fixings. i opted for the bbq chicken. it was tasty, cooked just right and the bbq sauce was delicious. i also had the orange potatoes, which are a mix of plain and sweet potatoes. interesting combination. my husband had pepe's fish. it was dolphin (yeah, sounds gross but was delicious) smothered in cheese, veggies, and sauce. we were stuffed and couldn't even finish our meals, but we were talked into splitting a piece of key lime pie. wow! that pies was to die for!
pepe's has a great breakfast and lunch menu. it is the oldest restaurant on the island. that alone is worth a visit.
My wife and I had breakfast at Pepe's at the recommendation of a local manning a kiosk at the pier. We sat at the bar an watched in amazement as the bartender-waitress handled her customers with rapid efficiency! Fresh squeezed O.J. and hot, fresh coffee. The meal, an omlette stuffed with crab, swiss cheese, tomatoes, and spinach was delicious as was the bread of the day, a coconut loaf. My wife had the eggs benedict and felt the sauce was perfect! We loved this place so much we also enjoyed dinner there that same night. The yummiest prime rib ever! The people there couldn't be nicer! Can't wait to go back!
