Ignore some of the bad reviews listed below! Of course on a Friday night there might be a little bit of a wait because the people at the tables won't get up! The restaurant can't help that. The food is excellent, and the service is wonderful. Some are intimidated by the valet parking, but it is optional and complimentary if used. Everyone from the valets and the hostesses to the chefs were warm and friendly. We had a wonderful time, and we plan to go back! If you need a night away or a good place for a nice romantic date, go to the chart house. We requested quiet table, and we were accommodated nicely. Highly recommended!
The Chart House is a Melbourne institution. Besides offering a decent sized steak and seafood menu, the salad bar offers high quality, fresh items, some of them unusual. These items include cavier (and the traditional trimmings), hearts of palm, and artichokes, and freshly made Caesar salad. Salad bar is $4 with a meal, about $12 without.
The fruits also make a good dessert if you want to be good. If you want to be bad, try the lava cake, or mud pie.
Also, on the being good side, some of the side vegetables (extra $$)are excellent
The $10 to $20 price shown on the main page here is deceptive. Expect to spend between $30 and $50 per person unless you really scrimp. One good way to do that is to split and entree, and one person gets the salad bar with the add on, and the other orders it as a meal. I got out for under $50 for two that way.
At one time, they had prix fix deal that was Salad bar, grilled fish, and cheesecake for about $20. Last time I went they did not have
We have been regulars of the Chart House for many years and while the food is still very very good, some things have started slipping. We always try and get the same server, but if he is not available I have noticed the other servers seem pushy to the point of intrusiveness and I noticed more and more super casually dressed people complete with ball caps. I feel there is a place for this kind of attire but that the Chart House on a Saturday night is not it.
Great seafood, small portions like you would expect at a pretty expensive restaurant...expect to spend $30+ a person unless you get the least expensive meal and water... Whether this place is always worth the money is debatable, but usually quite nice for a special occasion. I prefer Continental Flambe for that special atmosphere and excellent food over here, mostly because of Chart House's pushy or where-are-they? wait staff
