Captain Dave's on the Gulf
The oldest seafood restaurant in Destin, this fine waterfront restaurant was built in the 1950s and serves fantastic seafood dishes in a rustic, sea motif atmosphere. A seafood market, oyster bar, gift shop, arcade, and a room for larger group dining are also on site and they are open nightly for dinner.
The stuffed grouper is to die for! Our waiter Mark was the best - fun to play around with but attentive. The view was incredible, and unlike other restaurants in Destin, we had plenty of space to ourselves. You have to try this one for yourself!
After waiting at least 45 minutes...we were finally seated only to wait again....after 15 minutes we stopped a waiter and asked if we were going to get helped. He immediately took our drink order and apologized. Apparently their system is completely unorganized for assigning tables. We were not alone in this situation...I watched no less than 4 tables complain about the same thing; the wait staff just couldn't keep track of their tables since they were spread all over the restaurant. The food, once it finally came, was good. I wouldn't recommend going here at peak time or if you're hungry (or have kids that are). My other complaint - some of the tables have a view of the garbage can in the entry of the kitchen, which does not have a door....very unsightly and highly unprofessional. Of course, our table was one of these.
To start off, our waitress was horrible. She did not help with ordering the food at all. Did not tell us what came with the dishes we ordered so that we could make a choice. The info is not on the menu. She took it upon herself to make our choices (we fixed that, and got what we wanted). She was rude, unfriendly, and barely there. We did not get our glasses refilled, she failed to get things we asked for. She became feebly nice just once, when she brought us our bill!!!!!
The food was great. Our daughter's ordered shrimp. The shrimp had been fried in fresh oil. The shrimp was fresh and tasty. It was superb. Our dishes were equally as tantalizing. The only drawback was the coffee. It was old, bitter and as thick as oil! A waiter who happened by got me a fresh good cup. Who knew where our waitress was, she did not even bring me the bad first cup, another waiter who was walking by got it for me.
The view was great. We enjoyed watching the beach as we dined.
I left no tip.......a first for me!
Also, I am a local, I will go back, but will request a different server if she happens to be ours again!!!!!!
Surprised to see this listed as Number 1. We arrived during the week and looked forward to the same excellent food and service we have enjoyed in previous years. Call it an off night or poor management on duty, but this experience is not one that will be repeated. Our order was not taken quickly even though the crowd had cleared. The food was improperly prepared (overcooked) and service was some of the worst ever received. Usually like to give the local spots our business, however we will be elsewhere this year.
We do eat out quite a bit and I consider myself having rather high standards, especially for seafood. I was more than impressed with the food, ambiance and service. I had Grouper Ponchartrain with the softshell crab and grouper. It was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Other members of my family had Teriyaki fish and scallops, stuffed shrimp, combo platter and lobster and everyone was very happy. Our server was pleasant and friendly. The place was very family friendly and casual. The view was phenomenal. Its not cheap, but its great seafood right on the beach.
My husband wanted to go out for dinner on his birthday and I suggested this place because I have always loved their food... but on this day it was a total disappointment.
The fried items were very plain and my favorite Grouper Parmesan seemed to taste watered down.
After years as a regular guest at Captain Dave's, I encouraged my 'then' girlfriend to accompany me here for dinner. We arrived 'post-beach' and began our experience with a wonderful bottle cabernet sauvignon from their well-rounded wine list. As expected each course of the meal arrived in perfect time, and exceeded her expectations. As a former restaraunt manager she was quite impressed with the service... attentive but not over-bearing. The food was excellent, as I had promised it would be. We have returned several times since and we have yet to be disappointed. I am sure that the beautiful ocean view was considered a plus by the woman who is now my wife. If there were more than five stars available, Captain Dave's would surely garner them from us.
We loved that this restaurant was on the water with a beautiful view. We went early before the crowds, so the service was quite good. The food was good but not excellent. My husband and I eat out often, and this one just missed the mark. I've read that Captain Dave's is the oldest restaurant in Destin, and I believe that is what helps them have such a good reputation. If you rarely eat out, you will probably love this place; but if you eat out often, you will not be impressed with the food. Just savor the atmosphere and the view.
