Captain Dave's on the Gulf
The oldest seafood restaurant in Destin, this fine waterfront restaurant was built in the 1950s and serves fantastic seafood dishes in a rustic, sea motif atmosphere. A seafood market, oyster bar, gift shop, arcade, and a room for larger group dining are also on site and they are open nightly for dinner.
We went to Destin earlier this year and tried to eat here twice. Both times we waited for over 30 minutes for a drink and we never got seated even though there was literally no one there. Lots of folks left after several minutes. We ended up going to Pompano Joe s and it was simply outstanding. It s a little pricier but Pompanos has little or no wait even though the line is out the door and the food and service is bar none. Capt. Dave s is no longer a place we will ever return.
best seafood in destin, fl!! My husband and i tried capt. Daves on our first night in destin. It was located right across from our cottage. It was an amazing experience! Staff was polite and attentive, drinks were delicious, food was wonderful especially the hush puppies and the view was breath taking! Whether you re sitting outside or inside by the windows you can watch the sun set over the gulf.
WOW! some friends from home told us to be sure to go to capt. daves but after reading some really mixed reviews on line we were kinda skeptical. SOOOO glad we listened to our friends!!! the view was like being right on the beach but no wind or humidity. the food was WAY better then reported on line and service was fun & great! we had grouper ponchtane(?), fried shrimp, jane pasta and calamari to start with. everything was GREAt and be sure we tasted each others!!! our server was robin and she was funny and very helpfull in ordering our meals. she even told us NOT to eat too much bread as to save room for key lime pie. that was good advise but wasted on the fact the bread was delicious. we did have the pie but were so stuffed after large portions that we shared it between 3 of us. BEST food we had all week and we wish we went earlier in the week as we would have gone back. i usually don't write comments but we wanted OUR experience at capt. daves out there. we will go back and for sure tell others to as well. GREAT!!!!
Was recommended by a family member. It was OK. It was not great and not horrible. We all agreed that we would not recommend this restaurant. The service was very good. We received our food in a prompt manor . The seafood gumbo and house salad were both excellent. 3 of 4 in our party were very disappointed with our main course. The other person stated theirs was ok, but not great. The universal complaint in our party about the food was that it was bland, boring, and not flavorful. I used the salt, pepper, and used a lot of tarter sauce to try go give the food some flavor. The scenic view is awesome. We probably would not go back other than for drinks and a bowl of seafood gumbo.
BEWARE!!! Dinner at Captain Dave's 5/12/10 was terrible. Had 2 children, 4 & 5 at the end of a long day. Other diners who arrived 20 -30 minutes after us were served and had left the restaurant before our meals arrived. Waiter must have had a second job at a restuarant down the beach because he was nowhere to be found. Ordered a bottle of wine and after a 20 minute wait was told they were out. Changed the selection and after another 10 minute wait, didn't have that selection either. Grilled seafood was floating in grease. Asked for the manager but she was busy with something in the back and did not appear. Had to beg for the check and took another 10 minutes to find someone who could accept a payment. Will never set foot in this overrated place again.
Nothing like the old Captain Daves on the Harbor, it was wonderful, but you will normally get a pretty good meal with pretty good service, in a nice location on the beach. But, expect to pay for the location. Not a great value but worth a try.
**I had to write an evaluation of a restaurant for a class so i figured why not also submit it as a review**
We entered in the rugged nautical themed restaurant expecting a mediocre dining experience and we were exceptional surprised. My family tends to get a bit on the loud side when we go out to dinner so we prefer to be sat in a corner so we wont disturb those around us. As all eight of us approached the friendly hostess expecting a wait, we were immediately sat in a large round table in the corner of the room with a wonderful view of the ocean. Our young and very personable server Ben quickly greeted us. After a wonderful introduction and menu presentation he took our drink orders and had our waters our right away. As a waitress I understand the aggregation some tables can cause, but Ben had a great attitude with our rowdy group all night long. He patiently waited as we took twice as long as necessary to order our meals, skipping around from person to person instead of going in order. He willing re explained meals to us and laughed along with our silliness. Due to the wonderful service we had already received, the meal wouldn’t have to be perfect to enjoy our night out at Captain Dave’s.
Like most restaurants the salads and bread arrived quickly after our meal was taken, however I took advantage of the soup of the day and ordered New England clam chowder. Everyone else reported that their salads were phenomenal even my younger brothers who typically never eat salad scarfed theirs up; with the wide array of options of dressings everyone was happy. I was extremely satisfied with my choice to get the creamy and delicious clam chowder. Although I didn’t eat the bread, my brothers filled up on it before their meal came and even asked to take some home with us. About fifteen minutes later our meal promptly arrived just as we had ordered. We all ordered different items on the menu so we all got a taste of eight different meals; all wonderful. Each meal came with two hush puppies on the side, which was a scrumptious surprise. I ordered the grilled grouper with a side of cream spinach. Both items on my plate were wonderful. No one’s fish was too fishy, no ones sides were too dry, and all eight of us enjoyed our meals very much. So much that we boxed everything not eaten up to go home and ate it the next day for lunch.
Our adventure getting to this restaurant ended up taking us about an hour and a half with all the detours and dead ends, so to our best knowledge this was some crazy hidden eatery. As we left the premises, we left a different way we had come suddenly realizing that we were right next to our condo on the beach. The crazy route we had taken previously led us through a neighborhood, and we were assuming we would never find it again or even try due to it being so far away. But now that we realized this fantastic restaurant was basically in walking distance we will perhaps venture over there again before we head home at the end of the week.
Our encounter at Captain Dave’s exceeded our expectations in every way service, food and atmosphere. It’s not just anyone who can patiently wait on my family and keep up with our rambunctious personality but our server did just that. We luckily got lost and were able to stumble on to this great restaurant which immediately raised our standards for dining out here in Destin.
The food is great, well worth the money! Most places in Destin are kind of pricey,Capt.Dave's was by far the best. You may have to wait for a table but that's the price you pay for a good resturant, everyone wants to be there. You should never go if you are in a rush, its a great place to relax and enjoy the at atmosphere.
The best time to go is before sunset the view is awesome! We will definitely be back!
We read several reviews giving negative feedback to Capt. Daves. Although apprehensive we found none of the feedback to be accurate. The service was excellent, prompt with only a short wait to be seated. As usual those who have a gripe post and we who are happy just keep it to ourselves.
The fried green beans with Wasabi sauce was killer! You need to try it.
