Kool Beanz has recently expanded their seating capacity, and I'm afraid this has caused their food to lose its superiority. The kitchen has stayed relatively the same size; the guys just have to cook for about 30 more people at a given time. So quality cannot remain as high as it was in the past. The wait staff has always been a bit elitist with their funky clothes and passive attitudes, but as of late they are feeling the stress of additional patrons. Still a decent restaurant, but go for lunch instead of dinner, when you get the same portions for a much lower price.
This has been a favorite of mine since I moved to Tallahassee in 2001. The Dinner Counter ( watching the chefs) is great when dining alone. The atmosphere is fun for a date. I have a client who usually does not venture far off the meat and potatoes and he declared it one of that the food is one of the best for restaurants he has ever been to period. He is from NYC and lived in Paris for 3 years.
