the waiter was rude and did not check on us during the meal. the food seemed like cheap chinese take out. the restaurant has zero atmosphere and it was hot inside. all in all, i do not recommend this place. how did it get one of jacksonville's best?????
Very enjoyable snapper lad naa (snapper in a creamy, chili sauce served whole, adorned with blanched vegetables)! Don't be thrown off by its strip mall location. Too bad it wasn't open for lunch. We hung out locally then came back for dinner. It was well worth the trip back!
The food was quite good, but the prices were out of proportion. I don't think we'll bother to return since I have found better thai cuisine for better prices elsewhere in Jax. Quite a few vegetarian options.
I ordered the spring roll appetizer, which I expected to be fresh and amazing for $6. I got two of the same frozen and fried spring rolls I would usually get for $3 (and geth three of them) at any other thai restaurant.
The dinners were also pretty good, but were again at least $15 even for vegetable dishes. I am used to going home with enough food for lunch the next day when I eat thai, but here they were single serving portions. For two people: one appetizer, one hot tea, two entrees + tip=$51. The value was greatly missing.
They did seem to have a pretty extensive wine list. This would be a place to go if you want to spend more money than you need to on food. Service was polite but not exceptional. Ambiance: clean and tasteful but not amazing. The tables were small and set up in such a way that you felt too close to your neighbors.
When we first walked by this place, we were unsure, because the outside seemed very mysterious, and we were not sure what to execpt. But once inside the ambiance was very enchanting, and the authentic cusine was exceptional. The dishes were a little pricey, but the fresh, homemade food was worth it. I would highly recommend Old Siam to anyone looking for a change of pace, and some good quality food.
We have had Thai food in Hawai'i, San Diego, San Francisco, and St. Louis, and OLD SIAM has to be the best we have ever had.
It is consistantly good, the service is always professional and not overly attentive (just right), and the Panang Curry is to die for! We haven't had a dish that even comes close.
The ambience is mellow, a step above casual (though, we have gone in shorts) and would be perfect as a first date or romantic dinner.
They do have take-out.
I HIGHLY recommend Old Siam.
