European Street Cafe
Located in the San Marco shopping district, this restaurant features European flavors with the accent on German cuisine. A causal, deli-style menu makes this a popular spot for a quick bite. Try a giant stacked deli sandwich. There are more than 70 varieties on the menu to choose from! You will also find 10 cold salads and an array of soups, including beer cheese and split pea. Glass display cases are filled with desserts. The cafe features more than 100 types of imported and domestic beers, and a modest selection of wine, too.
This is a great place to go unwind. Love the food selection. Love the ambiance. I think it is a very romantic place. It is not so loud that you can't communicate with your dining companions. But not so quiet, you feel awkward on a first date. They have THE best beer cheese soup.
Ok, I must admit that I love this place for one reason - their happy hours. The selection of beer is amazing (especially for a Jax location) and the two-for-one special is icing on the cake. Their food, unfortunately, leaves much to be desired. The sandwiches are ok, but how can you really mess up deli meats? I try to steer clear of the rest of the menu because my experiences with this have not been good ones. Oh, and REAL German potato salad? Ok, I am originally from Jax, but am now a permament resident of Germany, and I can tell you with some authority that German potato salad is served COLD. I even asked my German boyfriend about this and he looked at me crazy (according to him, potato salad is never served warm in Germany). It doesn't even taste like German potato salad. So much for authentic food. No thanks. I'll stick to the beer.
We are locals in town and frequent European Street at least 2 times a month and are NEVER dissappointed in their Beer Cheese Soup, great selection of beers, and deliciously sinful desserts...not to mention their speciality sandwiches. GO THERE NOW!
I was pleasently surprised to find the variety of foods they had at the restaraunt, they mostly serve sandwhiches (85 different kinds I'm told) but they are also one of very few restaraunts in jacksonville to serve bratwurst, as well as Nutella. The food was excellent, service quick, and atmosphere perfect for a sandwhich shop. I did not try they're deserts, however they had a nice little chocolate shop inside the restaraunt. They also serve a wide variety of beer, and a couple of nice wines.
We have been there a couple of times and while the food is ok, the service has always been really slow, which makes us late back to work. To alleviate this we called to order our food ahead of time and were going to eat in the restaurant, which we have done at several area restaurants. When we called we were told the were full to capacity but when we got there at least half of the tables were unoccupied so again we asked the General Manager if we could dine in. To which she then said it was against policy, because it wouldn't be fair to the wait staff. I told here if we sat down to eat, we would obviously tip the wait staff and further more the only reason we were trying to do this is because they always took far too long to serve us when we did order in the restaurant. Then she basically told me I was lying when I told her that we have done this a other local restaurants and when we gave her the names of these restaurants she just dismissed us. It was the worst service I have ever experienced and obviously not a manager who cares about making here clients happy. I did not get my food that day and I will never return again, instead we went to Tidbits and it was just as good if not better and the services was outstanding.
