We visit SSI several times a year and like to eat at the Crap Trap at least once when we are there. The fried shrimp can't be beat. However, I hope the mangement pay attention to these reviews and hear these words loud and clear....hire new hostesses! They are the rudest, look-down their young noses, talk about you the second you walk away, bored with their job young ladies that you could have found. When people are on vacation they are in a mood to have fun...don't ruin it because you had to work on a Friday night. Be professional! And trust me this is not a one or two time experience we have had. It is everytime.
The best thing in this place is the ice water. Mmm, crushed ice...
We were sorely disappointed with the food. It was bad. I mean, woke up mad the next day, grumpy for a few days bad. And we WAITED for over an hour to eat crappy food. (Ok, truth be told, we walked home, took a nap and came back, but others sat the whole time.)
I love crab cakes. A place that has crab in the name should not have disgusting crab cakes. These patties were horrid! Mushy, greasy, filler laden and overly bell peppered. YUK! 3 out of four diners in our party ordered them and we found a use for the hole in the middle of the table. Crab patty hockey...
She crab soup? Too much sherry. Seemed watery. Not delicious...
I can't stand the nickel and diming! 50 extra cents for grilled? $2.95 for a salad instead of those pathetic soggy battered fries? My entree ended up being $22 for a little bowl of rock shrimp, some slaw, two hush puppies and a very average side salad.
Sad, very sad...
We vacationed on St. Simons Island for the first time. Everyone told us to go eat at the Crab Trap. Well, we have dined there twice - our first and last time! The spacious dining area you see in the picture is very deceiving. The tables are so close together, you can hear the conversations of all those sitting around you. The hostess sat two different parties near our table, bumped into me both times, and said absolutely nothing! The menu advertises seafood fried, broiled, grilled, or blackened. But, beware! There is an additional charge if you don't want it fried. Want salad instead of cole slaw? Extra charge. Can't eat an entire entree yourself or on a tight budget and want to share with another in your party? Extra charge. Granted, the food is good. But, you can get good food other places. And, possibly experience respect from the hostess and not pay extra for every little thing! Never again!
we enoyed the food mostly. we felt at ease in the casual setting. could not believe the portions of oysters, enormous. she crab soup delicious. seafood platter outstanding.
best seafood of all kinds to my rememberance. so good we haven't been able to get past it to other things on the menu.
we used to visit every year for our anniversay until i became limited in my ability to travel but we still go back often to relive the experience, and yes we are married as long as the crab trap has been open.
The food was very overrated. The fries tasted raw and crab cakes tasted burnt. And the coleslaw tasted like someone put a bottle of sweet pickle relish on the plate.
The service was super slow, which might be explained by the fact that the staff do nothing but stand around and talk about the customers.
This place may have at one time been a great place to go but now it is awful.
