In a Word, Amazing
Really, in my opinion, Elizabeth on 37th rivals both Magnolia Grill in Durham and Slightly North of Broad in Charleston. EXCELLENT all around.
The restaurant is in an old house, probably historic. Very beautiful to walk up to at night with all of the lights blazing.
We had made an RSVP for 7:30 but got there around 6:45. No problem, they were not that busy at that point so we were immediately seated. We didn’t care for the first table they sat us at and asked to be moved to a more intimate (and better lit) cozy corner table. It hadn’t been reserved, so, they were able to move us there.
They started us off with cheese drop biscuits with butter and apricot jam and we ordered our typical martinis (they were fine; you’d be amazed how many bars screw up pouring Bombay Sapphire into a martini glass!)
In addition to the regular menu, there were 3 appetizer/starter specials and two entrée specials. We both ended up ordering these. We were not disappointed.
Hubby had a grilled heart of romaine salad with an olive tapenade topped with some sort of grilled Greek cheese. I had local shrimp seasoned and sautéed then drizzled with pumpkin seed oil and covered with a butternut squash soup flavored with orange zest and allspice. Yum, yum, yum.
Before they brought out the appetizers, they gave us a complimentary taste of a Prince Albert mussel in a smoky tomato aioli sauce. Neither of us much care for mussels, but this was tasty.
We ordered a bottle of French white (rare for us but very good; a white burgundy).
Before the entrées were served, they brought us a small salad of local greens and herbs with apple and goat cheese and a maple vinaigrette.
For our entrées, hubby had local strips of flounder stuffed with chunks of lobster and crab served with string beans and leeks and I had local jumbo sea scallops sautéed in a wine and butter sauce served with a goat-cheese and cauliflower flan and pigeon peas (sort of like black-eyed peas).
When the entrées arrived, my first impression was that the portions were too small, but, the chef was right on in the allocations because they ended up being the perfect size (the food was very very rich).
But, very very excellent!
For dessert, we shared an almond-pecan tart that was not too sweet and went well with the espresso I also ordered!
The service was efficient, professional and knowledgeable. It was not exactly “friendly”, but, definitely courteous and respectful.
We’d most certainly recommend this place as a “special” restaurant (definitely not cheap) and will likely return at some future visit to Savannah.
