Whenever my mom and I walk around downtown, we always stop at the Grill for a bite of fries with feta cheese and a vanilla milkshake. I highly recommend both; the milkshakes are handspun and taste amazing and the fries and feta are a killer combo. I've been on a double date here, our waitress was nice and remembered me from a previous visit. Although my friend had a disturbing incident with the one bathroom, (what you've heard about it is horribly true) I highly recommend The Grill for their food. They sell cute Grill t-shirts too for only $8.00!
I ordered a reuben. It was unedible. I ate half of it because I was hungry, but I left the other half behind even though I was still hungry. It tasted like, while making the sandwich, they decided to smother it in salt. The saurkraut was there, but it had no flavor (I could only distinguish the texture). There was no Russian sauce. How can you mess up a Reuben?
The service is aweful. The server refilled drinks incorrectly for my companions, and didn't refill my water at all. I left this restaurant feeling thirsty and hungry.
Other than the Varsity...this is the place to go for the best Athens burgers/fries, etc. (and its within a much closer walking distance). Try the canadian bacon burger and cheddar fries...the perfect 1 am college treat.
The Grill is always a sure bet for the late night munchies for us! It's a must to get there before 2am, if out late, as the line is out the door and the place is packed. I do also have a problem with the bathroom. I don't see how they can have only 1, 1 for guys 1 for gals, in a restaurant that seats as many as it does. And the bathroom is never clean at night so I make sure I don't have to use it. I've only had poor service one time as the guy was more interested in his buddies across from us than he was in us. I always get the egg muffin, pretty good, but I need to remember next time to order the muffin cooked more! This is what I would consider a perfect rendition of a diner.
i''v lived in athens all my life, and i do love many of the eateries, but when some one is coming from out of town, and they want to see athens, the grill, not the varsity, or any other place, to me the grill isn't just great food, and a fun environment, but it's relay got a snap shot of athens in it
Well first off the service was horibble, and the reason why I say this is becasue I know it was because of the color of my skin. They did not want to serve my friends and I. The waiter came to our table and when we asked for our drinks he came back with them and threw them on our table which ended up making the whole table wet. We asked for straws and he threw them on the table and then walked off...We all ended up leaving pissed!!! I would not recommend anyone of color to go there because they dont want you there anyways.
It's my favorite place to eat in Athens. I'm a student here, and I try to eat there whenever I've got guests from out of town.
The food is consistently excellent, but not at all pricey. The service is superb-- I've never had an empty drink there, nor have I had to wait *too* long for the food. The traditional diner ambiance is really cool-- I think it's classy, but still really casual and fun. Also, since it's open 24 hours, it's a great place to grab a bite to eat any time-- which is great for a student like me.
Excellent! I have lived in Athens for years, was a HUGE fan of fries and feta, then I worked there in my college years. I was shocked to see the kitchen downstairs. They make everything fresh in the early morning hours. All the salads and veggies, and breakfast foods. The fries are HANDcut everyday on this old-style fry cutter. Most people don't deserve to eat there, and they don't even know it. Athens is known for it's famous bands, and almost every band member has eaten at The Grill. Many have worked there as well.
It's also a place where you can take screaming little tots to eat and no one cares.
So when you're taking you're picture by the Arches, turn around, walk a few doors down and eat at The Grill.
And if you talk to Jeff,( owner ) tell him Yoda sent ya.
Certainly the atmosphere was different than Waffle House, but the food wasn't particularly distinguishable. I had an omelet and it was acceptable - at best
The eating area was acceptably clean, while the restroom was absolutely nasty. Perhaps this is intrinsic of being in a college town? They would benefit from putting a little more effort into cleaning.
This restaurant has completely lost sight of customer service. The high population density of starving college students is, in my opinion, the only thing that keeps it alive. The waiter refused to split the check up (without explanation), and they freaked out when payment was left on the table instead of taken to the cashier. The waiter decided to pocket the money, and then was irate and unhelpful when it came to resolving the issue.
Unless friends are dragging me along, I wouldn't eat there again.
