I went in without expectations. I left with only one frustration---that i couldn't try everything while i was there. I will go back--the music on the deck was just right--the food delicious--the servers showing true southern hospitality.
I'm telling all of my friends how bad the service is at Hilltop.

When I spoke to the waitress about the food not being prepared well, the waitress was neither understanding nor helpful. Nor was the manager. I explained why I was disappointed to the manager (meanwhile he never made eye contact with me nor expressed apologies)and he snatched the plate off of the table and finally grunted something to me about not having to pay.
I placed an order for chicken fingers and received about five shriveled 2 inch pieces of 'chicken'. There were a few fries which amounted to more of a garnish than a side item. Then I asked for honey mustard and waited and waited, asked another waiter and waited and waited, then because my dinner date was almost finished I began to eat and as I finished my dry, tasteless food, here comes the honey mustard. This meal was over $10 and I was drinking water. I give everything a 1 star rating and that for the great interior design.
Well, never thought I'd write this one! Had a super experience at Hilltop for lunch with 7 other people. One of them was an extremely picky, fussy relative who has not enjoyed a restaurant meal for 10 years. Surprise, surprise! She not only loved Hilltop--service and food and atmosphere--but asked how soon we could return. We all had the same thoughts. Thanks for making my short list for Athens.
I went to Hilltop with a group of approximately 20 to celebrate the end of an era because of it's stellar word-of-mouth reputation. However, the atmosphere is (unfortunately, in my opinion) conservative - expect fraternity brothers and similiar types. I anticipated such an atomsphere (and was prepared), but was sincerely disappointed with the food selection and quality. This is definately not vegetarian friendly! I ordered the only serious vegetarian option option (pasta) but could have heated up a healthy choice meal for the lack of flavor.
We recently went for lunch for 8 to celebrate a birthday--we requested a table with privacy, and we couldn't have been more pleased. The atmosphere is exceptional, and not a single person in the group was disappointed in their food. Our waitress was sunny and pleasant--overall a very good experience. The out-of-town guests requested immediately that we return again the next time they visit.
My wife frequently eats there for lunch with a ladies group, and with few exceptions, it is the most-requested place on their list of suitable restaurants. It's also a good place to meet friends for dinner--good drinks, good food, not so loud that you can't enjoy conversation. Reading some of the other reviews and noting that most of them are written long ago, I suggest that people give Hilltoppe another try!
I was excited when Hilltop opened. It seemed like it would be a nicer choice than chain restaurants and yet more affordable than some of the downtown fancy places. It was both but only just. I believe in second chances so we have been there 4 times in about 2 years. Everytime it was disappointing. In Athens, if you want to spend $60-100 on dinner for two you expect more value.
The first time, I ordered Salmon and garlic mashed potatoes. The salmon was very dry and lacked flavor. The potatoes had the flavor and potential I expected, however they were cold and had formed a crusty mess opposite the fish. My date had the filet mignon and potatoes, he was equally unimpressed. The next time we went was a little better when we stuck to the burgers and salads. Unfortunately, our subsequent visits have involved entress that again fell short.
On the bright side, our drinks were excellent, especially my chocolate martini. There were also a few tasty appetizers last time. One was asparagus which was excellent. Overall, Hilltop Grille showed potential yet to be realized and fell short on value.
I do not reccommend this restaurant, especially on important occasions. Go downtown and you'll spend about as much but you will be satisfied.
