I used to live in Athens and loved 5 Star Day. I will agree that the prices have increased over the years and that I believe is due to the economy. As for the service, it is a self service type restaurant with the food delievered to you by a food runner and drinks replenished as needed, either by yourself (getting up and asking for a refill) or you getting the attention of the food runner. It is one super satisfying serving of sweet southern cooking with a side of soul!
This has consistently been some of my favorite food in Athens, and that's saying a lot. I love all the veggies (the salad dressings are fabulous) and daily specials. I'd never had sweet fried green tomatoes before them, but now I crave them. The thing about the service is that it's kind of an order at the counter, fill up your drink, and be prepared to be left alone thing... I personally like that. If you need something, you just walk the 3 feet to the counter. I love how the place is decorated with the mismatching floral tablecloths and local art. For a less crowded experience, go to the one on the east side... not as much people watching, but great food and lots of parking!
During the past year I have dined from time to time at 5 Star Day Café, and I always want it to be good, but it never is. I finally received friendly service from one employee, but most have been slow and slightly (if not overtly) dismissive and rude. The rudest of all would have to be the guy and girl tag team who took turns speeding up to our table to say nothing and take nothing, but only to glare at my sister and I as we attempted to finish our brunch – and the worst part of it was that I had stupidly tipped 20% beforehand when I paid for our order. As for the food it is usually flavorless (save occasional saltiness or a generic spicy aftertaste) and/or greasy and is often generoulsy infused with burned remnants of previoulsy-grilled food. More than once I have been served an item significantly different than described with no explanation. Sorry 5 Star Day. I want to love you. I really, really do. But your “cool” is merely a thin veil covering slow, surly service and sorry fare.
My office orders reguarly, thinking each time that we will finally be treated as respected customers. The service and the attitudes just gets worse each time. If the food wasn't so darn good, we would never go back.
The food is reasonably good. I used to go quite often, sometimes mor tha once a week. But prices have gone up twice, and the food is the exact same. You can eat at Last Resort, India Garden, Thai Caf for less during lunch time. The service couldn't be worst. They simply do not care to serve, and make a point out of it - no matter how often you go. Absolutely terrible. Avoid it unless you want to have an unpleasent meal.
The food is acceptable, hygiene does not seem to be a major concern (do they really need to use glued cups?), but worst of all, the service is deplorable. And, amazingly, the prices are not competitive: you can have a FAR better lunch (better food, better ambiance and better service) by the same price, or cheaper, at the Last Resort.
