Fontaine's Oyster House
Fontaine's Oyster Bar is located next to the Highland Tap Restaurant , and is very popular with locals and tourists alike. If you are expecting a chivalrous crowd and a well-dressed wait staff, then you will be a little disappointed. This no-fuss joint is a casual hangout, visited by office and college-going people during lunch hours. Evenings are always packed, as it is open till the wee hours of the morning. Try the Peel-n-eat Shrimp and the Jambalaya, prepared with fresh ingredients. You can have a drink at the well-stocked bar on a boys' night out, or plan a romantic date with your lady love on the beautiful patio.
This place is ROACH heaven. In the kitchen, on the patio and everywhere near the serving cart outside. Dont go near the tree or you will for sure get to view the roach race around the tree. Management knows about it but refuses to help customers who are attacked by the nasty gross bugs. Oysters are bad....gritty, smelly, and sour. DO NOT GO HERE! Bar area has roaches crawling all over glasses and the sink. Just plain nasty.
Not sure if it was a bad day but… we asked for medium steamed oysters and they arrived raw so we asked for them to go back, which is something I hate to do. When they came back they had never even touched a steam pot this time. The Oysters were completely cold. We didn’t say anything this time but it was too late we were already the bad customers and the service was way down hill from there. While we had plenty of time to wait in between drinks and the check we noticed we were not the only people having problems. It seemed like everyone that asked for steamed oysters received raw ones. Like I said it must have been a bad day.
I love the customers, most wait staff. The problem is this. the employees have known each other for so long that they will defend each other against mistakes concerning customers. They have lost established customers. But they do so well that I guess the employees can aford the loss. I use to spend over a $1500.00 a month. I will not go back. The click defends itself against people that do not fit in. Is this the reason for the frequent violence between staff and customers?
Enjoyed the Fried Dinner Plate and the Oysters were delightful. The batter was very light and tasty on the fried shrimp and catfish which was a very good surprise. The menu was varied with a bunch of different types of oysters, new orleans dishes (creole, jumbalaya) with side dishes including fried okra, red potatoes, and the staple red beans and rice. A few soups were also offered including lobster bisque, oyster stew, and shrimp & scallop gumbo. Very satisfying dinner experience.
My husband, daughter and I have frequented this restaurant many times. We love to travel to New Orleans to taste their oysters and end up at Fontaine's for the same when we come home. Their oysters are delicious.
