Vortex Bar & Grill
Vortex offers its award-winning burgers and contentious service from its original location in Midtown Atlanta. Originally opened in 1992 by a trio of siblings, this burger spot commands a cult-like following that mimics something akin to Stockholm Syndrome. The funky names of their burgers belie their generally conventional nature, the Lone Star Tex Melt, for instance, an iteration of barbecue sauce and onion rings with a cheddar-topped patty. Some of the burgers verge onto novelty territory such as the Triple Coronary Bypass, featuring an overload of patties, fried eggs, cheese and bacon between two grilled cheese sandwiches, something more at home on a reality TV promo. There are a number of caloric appetizers, sandwiches and sides, although the burgers are definitely the focus here. The burgers are worth checking out, although be advised the restaurant is 18 and up to accommodate cigarette smoking throughout the restaurant.
Sorry folks; I have to agree with Imperial and some others. We went all the way up there from the Kennedy Space Center to go to a ball game, and then take in the highly-recommended Vortex, and especially the burgers. Terribly over-rated burgers, and they just are not something at all special. Though some other menu items were okay, we all enjoyed the weenies at the ball park much more than the Vortex's burgers. The atmosphere is okay, but it is not for everyone. All-in-all, the burgers at Fuddruckers, Steak and Shake, and even McDonald's Quarter Pounder are significantly better.
I love the food, atmosphere and nearly all of the service I've received there. Spectacular place. Until today when I ran into a difference of opinion with a manager who started fighting from the initial conversation and escalated it without ever taking the time to understand the situation. Never have I received such horrible and hostile accommodation at a place I frequent. I would suggest avoiding it.
