My family and I visited the Sea Captain's House on Thursday, July 26th, 2012, to end our vacation on a high note. I hadn't been in a few years, but I had a pleasurable experience during my last visit and wanted to share this 'diamond in the rough' with my parents and nieces who had never been.
The evening started with a very friendly server. She got out drinks quickly and brought us some hushpuppies and butter to enjoy before our meals arrived. We did have to swat a couple flies, but we figured it was part of dining right on the beachfront. Shortly after our salads arrived, we noticed a family at the next table looking in our direction (we were seated a few feet from the wall/drink station). We thought it odd so we turned around to see a huge insect (looked like a cockroach but a beach bug of some sort) crawling on a tray of tea pitchers. This insect then took a trip to the floor and ran under our table. I tried to step on it, but it quickly ran towards another wall.
I told our server about it, and I could tell she was very embarrassed. I was also very embarrassed because my review was what brought us here in the first place. Within a few minutes, a man (who we later learned to be the manager), came out with another young man and started inspecting behind furniture in the dining room. They started behind the wrong wall, but he never came over to ask us. While they were inspecting, 2 more of the same insects came out of the same spot - one scurrying along the wall and one ran quickly towards my table on the floor. My mom jumped. The boy with the manager jumped towards the floor with a napkin and finally caught the bug.
At this point, we should have left. After a moment, the manager offered us another table, and we agreed. (I didn't know that the sickening feeling in my stomach would endure until the end of the night.) I can't really review the food this visit because I just ate as quickly as I could to leave while constantly checking the floor and wall around me. Our server was very friendly, and the manager came by a couple more times to check on us but never offered any sort of compensation for our experience that night.
After I returned home to Knoxville, I left a post on their Facebook page hoping to get some sort of response about my experience. I didn't blast them or anything; I just wanted to get some sort of response. They responded by deleting my post and not contacting me. Sadly (but maybe fortunately), my business is done with the Sea Captain's House. I hope they get their pest problem under control, but from now on, they will just be the place that had a bug problem and has poor management.
