I was in Charleston for the weekend and stopped at Sermet's Corner for a late lunch. It was a Friday around 2:30 so it wasn't very busy. However, our sever was- chatting with all the other employees. After finally taking our order and bringing our food we were somewhat disappointed with our crab burgers. They were fine, just nothing I would order again. The food was forgettable but the restaurant was charming. However on Saturday I realized I could not find my sunglasses so I called Sermet's Corner to see if I had left them there. After a description of the sunglasses it was confirmed they were there and I told them I would get them on Sunday on my way out of town. When I got to the restaurant on Sunday my glasses were no where to be found. All of the servers had remembered seeing them but somehow they had disappeared. Very put out, I gave them my number should they turn up. After no call Sunday or Monday I tried them to see if they had been found. Whoever I talked to was very rude and not helpful. I just don't understand how the sunglasses were there Saturday but not Sunday, I guess one of the employees liked them as much as I did. Lunch at Sermet's Corner was definitely not worth the loss of my favorite sunglasses!
My husband and son and I live in Greenville and weekend out in Charleston and we often joke that we would drive all the way to Charleston for Sermet's during the week.
The food is delicious and always such a pleasant surprise. Even when ordering dishes that sound perhaps a little different or maybe like an odd combination of ingredients we find ourselves taken aback by the amazing flavors. I do agree with another reviewer's point about this restaurant being for those with a palate, and not for anyone who lives on Burger King! They may be confused by what is happening in their mouth! We have never left even slightly disappointed and after five or more visits we have never ordered the same thing twice. More often than not we go offer thanks to the chef for yet another wonderful meal.
The atmosphere, of course, deserves its own mentioning. What a personality this place has. The old building is so full of character and it is really a joy just to be there. Paintings are hung on just about every available square inch of wall space. The waiters are helpful and very nice and our drinks are never empty, although I must say they are not falling over themselves about it - which I rather like, it keeps the whole experience relaxed. More of that personality coming through.
All-in-all this has become a regular haunt of ours when we are in Charleston. It is so refreshing to dine at a place that is so good not because of a million-dollar view or because all of the capital poured into creating a luxurious dining room but because the food is divine and the atmosphere is so enjoyable. Sermet's Corner is a gem.
