39 Rue De Jean
The polished mahogany wood, the red and tan color scheme, and the lively social atmosphere will make you feel as though you've stepped into an upscale cafe in Paris. 39 Rue de Jean, or Rue, as the locals call it, serves up American-French cuisine (as well as a few sushi dishes), and has been continually voted as the best French restaurant in Charleston. There is an upstairs lounge which can be rented out to large parties, and limited outdoor seating. If you're sensitive to noise, try to sit in the dining room to the right as the bar area can get quite noisy with the after-work crowd. A popular dish is the braised rabbit, cooked with white wine, creme fraiche, whole grain mustard, and served with potatoes dauphinoise. The muscles, served in six different ways, are popular as well. If you're stopping by for lunch, try the burger; many locals claim its the best in town. Brunch is offered on Sundays. Bar is open late.
Lunch for the 2 of us was great.
Quiche of the day, ham, bacon and onion, was very tasty and a generous portion.
The cheeseburger was the best I have had in SC. The cheddar was sharp and melted over a hot juicy burger with paper thin onion slice, great tomato, romaine lettuce and 2 midget pickles. The fries were right out of the fryer and crispy delicious.
The place was quite busy but our service was outstanding - coffee and water refills on the spot. The coffee seemed standard commercial which is a shame since most high end places serve that fantastic King Bean brew.
Overall, it is one of our favorites. As we are local, we will return often.
Wow! Great energy (not a quiet place) and some fine flavored food! I started with an excellent smoked duck sushi, followed by the veal chop with middle-eastern seasonings. The surprise was a very nice personal veggie soufflé on the plate. Super Service! I smiled the whole time I was there!
