Laughing Seed Cafe
Rabbit food? No, not at this little cafe! You can smell the fresh baked bread when you walk in the door. Fruits, vegetables and herbs from mainly local organic farmers are cut, diced, sliced, grilled and cooked into many wonderful dishes. Tempt yourself with hearty sandwiches, soups, salads and entrees in a variety of flavors that originate from many regions in the world. Desserts of all types offer a yummy finale to your meal. The decor is quaint and earthy.
We have eaten here several times and it is one of my favorite places to eat. The Pad Thai rocks! Everything is so fresh and tasty. The service has always been great! Don't pass this place by if you are in town.
My friends and I entered the restaurant from the stairs from the bar below. We were not sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves or talk to a hostess, as there was no sign at that entrance. After waiting about 10 minutes at some chairs by the bar, during which we were completely ignored, my fiance asked a passing waitress if we could have some menus. She asked if we had talked to the hostess, and directed us to the hostess stand (which was not visible from where we were sitting). We were told we could order drinks from the bar, and would be seated in about 20 minutes. When we tried to order drinks, the bartender told us he had a waitress coming to take care of us! Fair enough. We ordered a round of drinks, and were eventually seated. After that, things went a little better. Our waitress was attentive, and the food was good. I would go back again; however, the whole seating experience was disorganized. The Laughing Seed should make things easier for the patrons. If I need to seat myself, fine. If I need to see the hostess, fine. I don't mind waiting for a table. Just don't pass by my group and ignore us!!!!!
The Laughing Seed gives a whole new meaning to poor service and bad management.
My wife and I tried to have lunch there. We were seated promptly, and the waitress came to our table in reasonable time. We ordered a coke, two cups of soup, and entrees. The coke arrived flat, and a few monents later the waitress came to our table and told us that the soup we ordered was no longer available. She made another suggestion and we ordered two cups of french onion soup. One cup arrived luke warm, followed by a second cup that was barely warm enough to serve.
We then waited, waited, and waited for our entrees. People seated after us at the tables in front, on our side, and in back were served first, while we waited for our entrees. We finally asked the waitress about our food only to be told that the kitchen was backed up with orders. When we asked her to explain how come others seated after us were already served their entrees, we received a blank stare. We left in disgust paying for two cups of tepid soup and a flat coke.
There are lots of great places to eat in Asheville. Take my advise and avoid the Laughing Seed.
I've been to Laughing Seed several times, can't complain about the wait staff and the food is incredible. My favorite so far has to be a pasta special that included kalamata olives and fried basil - absolutely amazing! I have recreated the Harmony Bowl, which is now one of my stable recipes for weekly at home meals. Just wish I could recreate it the pasta. :-(
I'd have to agree about the general service the wait staff provides. Staff just doesn't seem to get it. Wait staff can be moody and slow. Other than that... food is usually great, just wish they had more food for the younger bunch and people just starting the veggie lifestyle. Harmony Bowl was a little bland for my taste. Other dishes a little more on the exotic side for us beginners. Teens didn't find much to please their palates. Maybe a raw veggie plate with some hummas dip? I might have missed it on the menu but what about a couple varities of veggie pizzas and some pasta? Laughing Seed Salad is good....
Maybe a newcommers plate to introduce new foods to the beginner or teen. Expand your menu some. IMHO
Overall it's a good place to eat. Go, try, enjoy!
My daughter and I went on a road trip to Tennesse for a family reunion. My husband had performed in Ashville and knew that we both would love Asheville and the Vegitarian dinning experience. He was on the money. We loved Asheville and the Laughing Seed. We had dinner on Saturday and Brunch on Sunday. Our only regret is that we could not bring the expereince home with us. I am certain we would be regulars.
Thanks for creating such a wonderful place to be norushied other than my own kitchen.
Peace and continued success.
