This was one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I have ever had. We felt like we were a burden to our server (who did not introduce himself, welcome us to the restaurant, or have any kind of greeting). We waited for at least 15 minutes to be acknowledged- and when we were, we were asked, "What do you want?" I understand that any job can get difficult and that everyone has bad days- however, I also expect a certain level of decency when I go out- especially at a restaurant that appears to be a little nicer than most. The food was alright- I would not recommend the pad thai though. It was soupy and did not have a lot of noodles. The main concern of his place for me was the awful, rude attitude of the person serving our food.

Best vegetarian cuisine evah!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/14/09
It seems that every time I visit Asheville, I end up at Laughing Seed for lunch or dinner...and I'm not a vegetarian! The Harmony Bowl will leave you wondering how such a tasty meal can make you feel so virtuous. The pakoras (different selection each day) are worth the indulgence. The wait staff is excellent and courteous, even when we walk in with a large group and no reservation.

We have eaten here several times and it is one of my favorite places to eat. The Pad Thai rocks! Everything is so fresh and tasty. The service has always been great! Don't pass this place by if you are in town.

Must Visit

Even if you are not vegetarian, you must eat at the Laughing Seed. They have a wonderful outdoor seating area as well. Charming restaurant and location, and you won't believe what they can do with vegetarian cuisine. Yummy!

My friends and I entered the restaurant from the stairs from the bar below. We were not sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves or talk to a hostess, as there was no sign at that entrance. After waiting about 10 minutes at some chairs by the bar, during which we were completely ignored, my fiance asked a passing waitress if we could have some menus. She asked if we had talked to the hostess, and directed us to the hostess stand (which was not visible from where we were sitting). We were told we could order drinks from the bar, and would be seated in about 20 minutes. When we tried to order drinks, the bartender told us he had a waitress coming to take care of us! Fair enough. We ordered a round of drinks, and were eventually seated. After that, things went a little better. Our waitress was attentive, and the food was good. I would go back again; however, the whole seating experience was disorganized. The Laughing Seed should make things easier for the patrons. If I need to seat myself, fine. If I need to see the hostess, fine. I don't mind waiting for a table. Just don't pass by my group and ignore us!!!!!

The Laughing Seed gives a whole new meaning to poor service and bad management. My wife and I tried to have lunch there. We were seated promptly, and the waitress came to our table in reasonable time. We ordered a coke, two cups of soup, and entrees. The coke arrived flat, and a few monents later the waitress came to our table and told us that the soup we ordered was no longer available. She made another suggestion and we ordered two cups of french onion soup. One cup arrived luke warm, followed by a second cup that was barely warm enough to serve. We then waited, waited, and waited for our entrees. People seated after us at the tables in front, on our side, and in back were served first, while we waited for our entrees. We finally asked the waitress about our food only to be told that the kitchen was backed up with orders. When we asked her to explain how come others seated after us were already served their entrees, we received a blank stare. We left in disgust paying for two cups of tepid soup and a flat coke. There are lots of great places to eat in Asheville. Take my advise and avoid the Laughing Seed.

I've been to Laughing Seed several times, can't complain about the wait staff and the food is incredible. My favorite so far has to be a pasta special that included kalamata olives and fried basil - absolutely amazing! I have recreated the Harmony Bowl, which is now one of my stable recipes for weekly at home meals. Just wish I could recreate it the pasta. :-(
