Mayfel's, Asheville

I am a local and rate Mayfel's as one of the best downtown eateries, and that is saying a lot in this town. I am unclear about the negative comments, but every time I go, I am treated well, service is friendly, and food is freshly prepared and delicious. It is not fine dining, and doesnt try to be. I love that back courtyard and have had many an enjoyable evening there. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone. Come see for yourself what I am talking about.

Been going here for 7 years. I think that Mayfels offers a true dining experience. From the decoration of the dining areas, to the attention shown in creating the food, this restaurant is hard to beat in asheville! And FYI, the only frozen foods served are some of the out of season vegetables, not any different than 99 percent of all restaurants...And seriously, complaining about smoking outside? what is this, 1995? Get up and move already.

Awful - just about any of the other restaurants around Pritchard Park have higher quality food and better service.

The shrimp and grits were wonderful..I would drive seven hours just to order the dish again....

I am a bit suprised by the negative comments. I, too, live in Asheville and my husband and I love to go to Mayfels for breakfast. Very, very good and wonderful service. They also have a make-it-yourself Bloody Mary bar thats great! Casual and relaxed atmosphere in the heart of downtown Asheville.

Quite possibly the worst dining experience I have ever endured. From the slimy cooks leering at my date, the poor quality of frozen food served after a long wait to the sight of the waiter's butt-cleavage everything was disgusting. When I informed an employee of the broken toilet in the men's room, I was met with pure apathy. The sign on the door stated the restrooms were for customer's only. I guess all the bums from the park across the street were eating there too since we watched several walk thru the dining area too help fill the bowl (albeit with poor aim.) I am local and the best advice I have for visitors to Asheville is to stay away from this place. There are far too many superior restaurants within walking distance to waste your money and appetite at Mayfel's.

We recently went to Mayfel's for dinner. It was a beautiful evening and we chose to sit outside. We thought non-smoking restaurant meant non-smoking everywhere. We were surrounded by smokers. Since we were with another couple, we stayed. I have been sick for 3 days since because I am so allergic. The food and service were great but we wouldn't go back because of all the smoke.

I first went to Mayfel's with my wife on our honeymoon. They have a very relaxed atmosphere and amazing food. It's not fine dining, but it is great eating. I especially recommend the grilled cheese sandwich and the coffee, which is delicious. Enjoy!
