This is a great local joint that serves a very nice breakfast, and has some pretty decent lunch choices (fried seafood wise), but not a favorite of mine for dinner items, especially anything in the fine dining area. This restaurant is one of the best examples of why you should know what a place does well, and stay with that, and stay simple.
Most of their fried seafood is decent, and when it is fresh, it is excellent. Two examples of what I mean about ordering here. They have NC style barbecue on the menu, ande unless you are going out of your mind for a barbecue fix, leave this alone - they don;t cook it here, you shouldn't eat it here.
Second example: The Soft Shell Crabs are on the menu as seasonal (May - June time period), and when they are available in that time period, they are great. The Catch of The Day is usually what is fresh and available, and it normally will be excellent, but not everyone likes every kind of fish, like bluefish. Fries here are excellent. Remember: fresh fried seafood, good fries, and slaw - they do this well.
This was started as a breakfast place, and that is what they do best. Portions are ample, prices are very reasonable for this meal, gets on up there for dinner items.
We have been eating at Sam & Omie's for 25 years. We love the causal and old Nags Head feel. Breakfast is always wonderful with great bloodly Mary's, they have the best She-Crab soup anywhere, the fried flounder is the best on the island...and the fried vegetables are so yummy! Not sure what some of these people are used to - but if you're looking for a causal place with good food and drinks, and a friendly staff then try Sam & Omie's!
WE HAD EATEN HERE SEVERAL YEARS AGO, AND FOOD WAS GOOD. LAST TIME WE WENT, WE WERE GREETED BY A NASTY AND RUDE HOSTESS, DIDN'T CARE ONE BIT, IF WE STAYED OR LEFT----SO WE LEFT. WE HAVED CROSSED THIS NEW OWNERHSIP OFF OF OUR LIST.
I must say this is where good seafood comes to die. This was the most disapointing food I have ever had. After driving 11 hours to get to the OBX to enjoy some of the finest seafood in America, we decided to eat at this dive expecting much better. They have no wine list, our waitress , btw most of the staff probably just got out of some prison or local holding cell told us their best wine selection was at the 7-11 down the street but she may have some ripple, we ordered some clams and oysters because we noticed that all they did was deep fry some of the worlds best seafood and basicaly crucify it, hairs standing on the back of our neck we asked for our check..... the cook who needed to wash his hands at least came out of the back to cast smears at us on the way out. If you enjoyed this place God Bless you. And you may want to see your doctor. We had so much better food on OBX at Dirty Jim's and Mulligan's this place is a total joke
With the exception of the coffee, everything was 100% average. I suspect the coffee was maxwell house, tasted pretty terrible. We ate breakfast - pancakes, eggs, etc. Everything was simple, tasted home-made, but unexciting.
