All I can say is that the food is good ole southern cooking. And I dont care if they are friendly or not, because for the little price that Im paying I can endure some unfriendly servers on the line. If you want ambiance, go to some place that charges you for it. Bell Brother's gives you lots of hot, good food at a great price.
Fried chicken is really good. I've never been in the place - only had take out someone else picked up. The tea was good too. I disagree about the mashed potatoes and cake I had. They were OK. But, if they taste like your mom or grandmom made, then your mom and grandmom must have made them out of a box because that's exactly what they tasted like - instant potatoes and cake mix cake! I don't know, maybe because I live in a family where boxed potatoes and cake mixes are as much of a no-no as adultry and alcohol, I might be spoiled to what they SHOULD taste like. I've had enough meals with friends who don't cook to know what the boxed stuff tastes like. But, the cornbread, green beans, and fried chicken were excellent so I can deal with the potatoes and not bother with the cake. Maybe they were having a bad day and next time I'll try the pie.
I called this restaurant this evening to find out the hours. My husband and I were planning to go there for dinner. The person who answered had such a nasty attitude, we've decided to go elsewhere. I can't rate the food since I haven't eaten there, but coworkers told me it was good, which is why we were considering going there in the first place.
Bell Brothers was one of the major highlights of my recent visits to Winston-Salem.
I love the atmosphere. It has a charm all its own. I remember the two giant tanker sized vats of sweet tea and just one little coffee pot sized unsweetened tea! These guys have their priorities in order!
The food was great. Nothin' fancy, but it was plenty good and there was plenty of it. Be sure you're really hungry.
I had the catfish (cooked just right and not greasy), my friend had the fried chicken (again, just right, and so tasty!). You can't go wrong with whatever you order.
Thank you Bell Brothers Cafeteria. Your place is one in a million!!!!
If I'm ever back there, I'll make a beeline to Bell Brothers.
If you live there, jump in the car and get over there pronto!
