we had no problems at all with our stay. they did say we could check in early but we ended up getting delayed in morgantown by traffic so we were past our requested time. Staff was wonderful and check in was fine even tho they had spelled our last name wrong on confirmation. Its a beautiful place to stay, yes it could use updates and modernization, but it was a reasonable rate and beautiful scenery and lots of things to do at resort and in surrounding areas. we usually stay at nicer places but my hubby was pleased by our stay and he is usually the critic that can be hard to please! we would stay here again if we were going to do the same things again. We had a good time playing golf at their course, it was very beautiful and peaceful.
What is there not to like .It is buitifull place . The deer come right up to your room if you r in the back lower door level.I have photo's of each of my children feeding and nose to nose with deer.
the in door pool is always a great idea after skiing with children . true it is on the small side but if you go during the week you'll be fine or during skiing hr .The hot tub is so welcoming after a long and cold day on the mountain .
Breakfast is really good ,buff style or menue up to you .The view when eating is a sight to see .Food is hot and fresh .
Everyone is more then happy to get you what ever you like .
As 4 skiing .Wow the skiing is great 4 all age groups .The slop is not crowed at all in fact you might find your self by your self ..Lifts r fast no lines . This is WV little secreat ski place.
They do have ski school and day care i will say is in the main building not on the mountain .But they do a great job with your child .
Now food wise . there is a food court as all places seem to have ,but as all seem to be a little $$ but you can bring a lunch or cooler and leave on a table . It has a nice big fire place you can sit by .
Nite life is not much ..This a small after hr place in the main building but it is not a club . This is really a family palce .
There r great resterunts just about 5 min away . The Saw Mill ( good old fashion home cooking Great prices ) Johnny's is a little like a chuckie cheese , the is a great Itlian pizza place in town .Just ask i for got the name but everyone know's it S something yummy .
I all most forgot there is ice skateing & tubbing what fun .Bring a game or two for night is your children need to actived all night , there TV u can bring your play station or the plug in games to it .
Great family fun .Get back to the family vacation and not the buy me and party all not long .
You'll have a blast .oh caffie pot and hair dryer is in the room .
We stayed there 8/07 for five days for the Concours Owners Group (Motorcycles) National Rally. We had a wonderful time there. The rooms are neat, clean and spacious with chairs made from logs. Deer visited on the back lawn nightly.
They have a nice snack bar, buffet style meals at the restaurant, a large swimming pool with a large hot whirlpool (yeah!) indoors and a larger swimming pool outdoors. The park was beautiful, they have camp sites, and a ton of activities for every desire.
I would stay here over a Hilton any day!
This resort was really nicer than I expected. We visited 15-16 July 2006.
Activities= Though it was raining when we go there, the resort staff advised us on activites we could do until it stopped raining. We arrived late morning and still had time to take advantage of the adventure pass of which we participated in rockwall climb, eurobungy, mountain bike, miniature golf, tennis, geocaching, ski lift to the top of the mountain and spend time in the pool all before 8PM.
Food= they have a resturant and a full service snack bar and the food was pretty good in both was pretty good affordable
Rooms= Clean spacious
Staff= I cannot say enough about the staff...everyone was very nice and eager to help answer questions..In fact I lost my wedding rings during some of the outside activities and the staff took the time to help us retrace our steps and help us look for it. One of the very honest staff members found them after we left and made sure I got them back. It may not seem like a big deal but I travel a lot and when you leave/lose something you rarely see it again. For that fact alone we will be returning in the near future. I have nothing but good things to say about this resort.
Canaan Valley is a State Park. If you're expecting the Hilton, go stay at the Hilton.
We found the lodge rooms to be clean and well maintained. The restaurant and snack bar offered great food as very reasonable prices. All of the activities listed seemed to be there and as represented.
I took my kids across the road to the Ski Area and we rode the chair lift. We loved it! Beautiful park, wonderful staff, reasonable prices. Can't wait to go back!
Do not be fooled by Canaan valley website!! The resort is old and yucky. The crib we were given for our 6 month old was rusty and banged up. The sheets they gave us had holes in them. The amenities--golf course, swimming pool, game room, paint ball course--were all short of our expectations. Most of them were tiny and only just enough to allow the hotel to claim that it had them. We would not stay there again or recommend it to anyone.
Black Bear is a hidden gem. It is an incredible year round resort with a community feel in the wilderness.
