We recently moved to South Boston from New Jersey, and we were missing all of our favorite restaurants. We got a recommendation to go to Bistro 1888 and we were so surprised! The food was amazing, and the atmosphere is great. We have gone back several times and have always had a great dinner. It is a must when you are in South Boston!
Bistro 1888 is awesome and is receiving some great recognition in the 2008 Virginia Travel Guide, the March 2008 issue Southern Living MidAtlantic Bonus Section and in the Mar/Apr. AAA Going Places in New York. If you're in the area, ya gotta go.
While traveling, we stumbled into the small town of South Boston around 6:00 on Friday evening, expecting to have to settle on a fast food place.
Somehow, we lucked out and came upon Bistro 1888. The restaurant was nearly full, but the hostess kindly accommodated us.
WE WERE SO IMPRESSED! The atmosphere was great, the artwork intriguing and the food....oh my God, it was great from the presentation, to the selection to the flavors Chef Moorefield put together. The wine list of over 100 selections was wonderful too.
It's worth the detour if you are traveling anywhere near South Boston.
All the reviews as of 2/27/06 are right-on except mufonguys (and any other diner) who prefers buffets, barbecue and all-you-can eat establishments. (By the way, mufonguys, 'upscale' is one word.)
When you step through the doors at BISTRO 1888, you feel like you are in a great restaurant in a major city. I drive from Durham, NC (an hour away), and it is a great overall experience every time from the food, to the service, to the wonderful ambiance.
How Southside Virginia lured this restaurant to the area is a miracle.
Everything was great from the moment we walked in. Rarely do you find 24 exquisitely prepared entrees offered in an upscale restaurant even in big city - and all at reasonable prices! Be prepared...this place will blow your socks off!
I live 30 minutes away and frequent BISTRO 1888 a lot. It's always top notch. The cuisine is truly remarkable, the menu has something for everyone, and the ambiance creates a big city feel.
If you're in the southern part of Virginia, you will find it a delight.
You won't believe this place... in rural Southern Virginia! Everything is fantastic.
Can you imagine a choice of 12 appetizers.... like seared yellowfin tuna, calamari, grilled or tempura shrimp, crab cakes, chicken or avocado and goat cheese quesadilla, Prince Edward mussels and more.
Everything is made in house -- from the unbelieveable demiglace on the filet mignon to the 5 homemade desserts. Just a few of my favorites out of their 24+ entrees are the New Zealand Lamb, Filet Mignon with crab and crawfish saute, Grilled Salmon, Etoufee, and Chicken Angel Hair. And don't forget dessert....the chocolate decadent stack is to die for and the creme brulee is as good as you'll find in France.
Since opening in 2003, Bistro 1888 and the chef/co-owner Margaret Moorefield have received some great reviews, and it's easy to see why that are putting this part of Southern Virginia on the map!
You'll love it all ...the ambiance, the food, the presentation, their wine list of over 100 wines and the service.
