It's pretty good there. Service seems to take FOREVER though, so I wouldn't go there if you're in a rush. Portions are generous. The service is slow but their food is always hot and fresh from the kitchen. The inside is cool- it has their original menu and the prices, which is fun to see. Overall, it's a good place... just wish it didn't take as long as a restaurant does!
I had really looked forward to visiting this drive-in, both because of the old style curb service and the excellent reviews on the hot dogs, hamburgers, and such. Rarely have I been more disappointed when eating at a place I had heard so much about. The hamburger was dry and almost completely tasteless after removing some of the mound of mayo on it. The hot dog was big with a good quality wiener and the bun was soft, but the chili had huge chunks of meat, more in the style and taste of a spaghetti sauce, and the about of mustard was unbelievable. The fries were completely inedible, cold, over-cooked, and greasy. Sometimes you can catch a place on a bad day with an item here and there, but this was beyond that kind of experience. The Kline's and Hog Wild combo down the road had great fries, a better dog, and pretty good Carolina BBQ.
I have been to Wright's a couple of times hoping it would get better each time. Guess what: it gets worse. The burgers are tiny and have no flavor at all. The fries taste like baked Ore Idas at best. I don't understand why it takes 45 minutes to make a cheeseburger basket and a reuben. One guarentee from going to Wright's: You Will Always Leave Hungry.
I can't say enough about the Bar B.Q. with slaw -- even while living away, the very first place I stop, even before visiting my parents in Dairy Rites... Somethings don't change... Went crusin' there as a youngster, in 1965 Barracuda -- Best in town.
I grew up just outside of Staunton so I grew up going to Wright's. You walk in, pick your own table, look at the menu, pick up the phone in the booth and call in your order! OR you drive in, push the button and order the food right there in your car. It's great! The food is excellent. And the icecream and milkshakes are delicious! Try the brown derby... you won't be dissappointed!
I have been going to this place since the '50s. The highway was a two lane road and the parking lot was gravel.
The food is great and the atmosphere is just as good. The Cash family are experts at hospitality. Don't be in a hurry this is not fast food it is good food.
