My husband and I tried out this place after reading the reviews here. He is temporarily stationed at Langley afb so we are not local. The salad was actually pretty good.. I got the cesar. The baked potato soup was also impressive. My main course (a seafood platter) was a sizable portion and would have satisfied most people. However, it had a premade, pre-prepared look and taste too it. Previously cooked, compiled, and then warmed in the oven as a platter before served. That part was not so impressive for the price. Overall though, it was a good place.
Surf Rider is, in my opinion, one of Hampton's best kept seafood restaurant secrets. This place easily has some of the best seafood I have ever had. Their speciality is their grilled 5oz. crabcake, but rest assured that most anything ordered will be equally special to your palette. My meal consisted of their super delious crab dip and toast appetizer, a ceasar salad, fried flounder, scallops, shrimp, and iced tea. All of this come out to barely $30 at the end. It was a meal well worth its price. Surf Rider sits on a marina overlookin water and yachts. At night the atmosphere is very well-suited for daters or couples. There is a bar and television near the front of the establishment for those wishing to drink and watch sports. Trust me, one meal at Surf Riders and you'll be hooked...like a fish.
This place is great! My husband and I went there and absolutely loved it! The crab dip is some of the best we'ver ever had, the seafood is extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. I had the Surf Rider steamer combo of scallops, crabmeat and shrimp. There were huge lumps of crabmeat and the scallops and shrimp were tender and sweet. My husband had the brioled seafood platter. His crabcake had no filler- it was all chunks of sweet crab seasoned to perfection. Their desserts are all made in-house. The key lime pie is more of a whipped/frozen icebox type pie that was delicious, lots of key lime flavor with a creamy cool texture. We will definitely be back here for more!
We just got home from this place. Terrible experience with this one waitress and even though the manager came out to apologize and gave us %15 off our meal I doubt we ll be returning. Our steak bites came out bloody when we told the waitress well done. I took a big juicy bloody bite out of one before realizing. Biggest mishap of the night was giving my husband a totally different meal from what he ordered: a chicken pasta instead of a tuna. He is and has been a life long vegetarian and as I write this he is going through the motions in the bathroom. I thank the manager on duty for apologizing and trying to right the mistakes but the waitress in no way whatsoever apologized for anything. She avoided us after the chicken/tuna incident and kept us waiting to pay and we wanted to leave quickly since my husband started to get sick. Great food but after this, I ll find my way to another seafood place. Sadly it was my nephew s birthday but that was obviously overshadowed by what happened.
This place is fantastic! I went there for the 1st time a few years ago for my birthday and feel in love instantly. It says they have outdoor seating which the one in Hampton does not but you can sit next to the windows and see all the boats in the marina. The food is amazing and you MUST try the Mud Pie the best dessert I have ever tasted! I highly recommend this place great to go with friends or family... prefect if you are not the quietest bunch around!!!
We had another excellent dinner at the Surf Rider Saturday night. There was a 35-minute wait for a table (the Surf Rider takes no reservations), but the meal was worth it. We started with the simple tossed salad, with dressing served on the side. My balsamic vinaigrette was rich and tangy, and my husband's parmesan peppercorn mild and creamy. Following that opener, I had the best seafood alfredo I've ever eaten. The simple white sauce was mildly seasoned, accenting the penne pasta sharing the plate with an equal amount of scallops, shrimp and crab. I was in heaven. I easily took half of my portion home for another meal. My husband had the seafood marinara pasta, which featured a tasty sauce filed with chunks of tender tomato and sliced black olives which blended well with the delicate flavor of the shellfish. The prices were average (under $20), and the service was very attentive. Our young waitress was prompt, cheerful, and helpful despite being in the middle of a busy Saturday shift. One thing to take note of is the ambience; the open, simple main dining area shares the same space as the kitchen and the bar; the full restaurant was noisy enough for us to have to raise our voices to converse. That was a small accomodation to make for a great meal of delicious comfort food in a friendly, comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.
During the holidays, my family had the wonderful experience of eating at Surf Rider. I've eaten at other nice seafood restaurants in the area and paid more money for food of less quality. Everything we had (some had seafood, one had steak) was delicious and the staff and service was warm and friendly. I'll definitely return !
Excellent atmosphere, service, view and the food was outstanding. The only down side to our meal was that if yuo're going to offer a surf and turf make sure your turf is good. The steak was bland. But other than that the food was great.
Everything was great except the hostest wasn't very friendly. The food was absolutly amazing, some of the best crabcakes I've ever had and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Well worth finding it's hidden location!
