Catholics and Big Families Not Welcome at Don s Seafood Market and Restaurant.
After mass we went out to celebrate that after a year of cancelled trips, plans, and missed birthdays, we were finally able to be together. The restaurant didn t have any room for a crowd so big so they put us in our own room upstairs in the bar... We didn t think anything of it. A second large group was seated up there shortly after. The restaurant was incredibly busy, so we opened presents and the kids played while we waited over an hour for our food. About 45 minutes in, the hostess came up to seat a family dressed up from church. She stopped at our table and told us (loudly enough for those around us to hear) we would need to settle down and be quiet because there were church folk in her restaurant.... After she left, the table next to us started hooting and hollering we re the loud ones, no one can behave worse than us. It helped bring back some laughter.
As far as the food, the wait was so long the clam chowder was cold. The bartender was incredibly busy and we didn t get our side order of macaroni and cheese until it was time to go. Our waitress was very hard working and kind. If it wasn t for her dedication and incredibly hungry kids, we probably would have walked out.
After complaining to the owner we found out she s his wife and no apologies would be made. Blank stares were given when we told them we d just walked over from church. The best we got is children can get in people s way.
So, if you are ever in Chincoteague, Virginia, you might want to know Catholics and big families aren t very welcome at Dons Seafood Market and Restaurant, though I have to say St Andrews of the Apostle was amazing. In hospitality, they gave the kids these lovely crosses with values and virtues written on the back like peace, charity, and forgiveness. I m thinking the Lord knew we d need them!
At first glance this place would look like about the only descent place to get a good bite to eat while visiting the island. My wife and I recently took a trip to Dons and were both extremely disappointed. We both ordered the Crab Platter, which happens to be the most expensive thing on the menu. The crab was so over cooked it was almost painful to eat it. This place should be ashamed to call its self a seafood restaurant. If you like seafood and value your hard earned money avoid this place like the plague.
I go to Don's all the time. The service is great. The menu is for everyone. It is owned by a local who raises the clams and oysters for the business. The food is great. They are always packed when I go in there. If you want to go to a nice laid back environment go to Don's Seafood there is something for everyone. P.S. go to the health inspectors page most of the top star ratings have very poor ratings. Don's rating is excellent. :)
Our first visit to Don's was Nov 2007, and I have to say it was a great meal. We enjoyed it so much that we returned several times. The only disappointment were the oysters....not naturally salty enough and someone in the kitchen had added salt to liven them...hugh mistake. In all fairness it was a bad time to try oysters, as Chesapeake oysters had a poor year and southern oysters do not have them same same taste, but we were all craving the bivalve. Our second trip we partook of the nightly special, a wonderful concoction of crab, ham and asparagus that more than made up for the previous oysters. Others at the table had the crab cake....rating them pretty high on our personal dining scale, and the fish of the day got rave revues too.
If you go save room for desert.....they own the local bakery and serve some of the best sweets .
