Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín, Granada

Description

Rising above the modern lower town, the Alhambra and the Albaycín, situated on two adjacent hills, form the medieval part of Granada. To the east of the Alhambra fortress and residence are the magnificent gardens of the Generalife, the former rural residence of the emirs who ruled this part of Spain in the 13th and 14th centuries. The residential district of the Albaycín is a rich repository of Moorish vernacular architecture, into which the traditional Andalusian architecture blends harmoniously.

Visit the Alhambra at night
By ,
The Alhambra is fantastic, but if you would prefer to beat the crowds (and the hot sun) why not visit it after 8pm when you can purchase a reduced price night time ticket. Granada looks fantastic at night and the Alhambra looks completely different when all lit up Steve Go2Granada

The must see in Spain
By ,
Get there early or late because everyone who comes to Granada comes here. Despite the crowds the place is worth it. Be rested when you go, the palace and environs and very large and all of it is worth exploring, except Charles V's unfinished palace. The wall and ceiling carvings are exquisite. The Generalife was gorgeous with many flowers in the spring when I was there.

Amazing
By ,
I spent 4 weeks in spain last year and Granada was one of my last stops. Oh, I wish I had more time to spend in that city just to explore the Alhambra. It is more beautiful than anything that I had ever seen. I spent an entire day walking through the gardens and examining the architecture. If you are going to visit the Alhambra, make sure you set aside an entire day. It is a lot of walking but it is well worth it.

La Alhambra is incredibly beautiful
By ,
Granada shows all that could have been right with religious tolerance. I couldn't help but imagine if Christianity, Judaism and Islam learned from each other the beauty and knowledge that would come from them would be unmatchable. This Islamic palace/fortress is probably one of the most beautiful architectural pieces ever. The corte de los leones, the sounds of the water and the reflections of the sky, the gardens... it is incredibly beautiful. You can almost imagine Schahirizad(?)fabricating her Arabian Nights' tales. No wonder Washington Irving was also inspired to write here too. To truly understand Spain's rich history of so many cultures, religions and arts; you have to see Granada - just not in the hot mid-afternoon summer (unless you have no choice). That time is for siesta anyway.

Espana or Bust
By ,
I just recently returned from Spain. I was fortunate to visit Granada. It was amazing!!! The fact of the matter is how they built these castles and fortresses without all of the heavy equipment. A must see for Spain is Segovia.... Also Corboda.. Food is wonderful, euro's aren't the greatest but the people are very friendly. Don't forget to see the gypsey's cave show..
