Archaeological Site of Panamá Viejo and Historic District of Panamá

Description

Founded in 1519 by the conquistador Pedrarías Dávila, Panamá Viejo is the oldest European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. It was laid out on a rectilinear grid and marks the transference from Europe of the idea of a planned town. Abandoned in the mid-17th century, it was replaced by a ‘new town’ (the ‘Historic District’), which has also preserved its original street plan, its architecture and an unusual mixture of Spanish, French and early American styles. The Salón Bolívar was the venue for the unsuccessful attempt made by El Libertador in 1826 to establish a multinational continental congress.

Veri interesting experience
By ,
Panama vieja, is a bundle of history and a very nice experience; I highly recommend the visit. There's a visitor center, but if you drive must pay attention since there are not enough signs, start your archaeological experience there, you'll be amazed. Lots of pirat stories, treasures, battles and some humor too. Walk to the ruins, ok !! a bunch of old stones, but panamanians are very proud of them, go and you'll find out why. Casco antiguo is not worth the visit, ugly, dirty and scary. Plan a visit to Panama canal, worth the drive, there's much to see there, so take your time, 6 hrs top. If you like mess and crwds, go to Colon dutty free zone, personally I was very disappointed. Not that cheap, didn't feel as safe as in any of the huge malls. Visit Albrok mall, it may not be cheap for americans, but surely you'll find things hard to find in US. Like beer?? try Balboa or Panameña, the rest are not good

I find the city all dirty, all over, and also don't really care about it. There are lots of tourist, but for them is all the same. They should weak up more and be more up to date. Otherwise is a nice place to visit.

truly great
By ,
Great experience. Exciting and vibrant. Everything J'aime Carlson said is still true. Very alive and atmospheric. Panama Viejo is a World Heritage site. Great food. Slight sense of danger (unfounded). Nice people. It doesn't rain all day in the rainy season. It ia also fairly easy to visit the other many interesting regions in Panama outside the city.

Vibrant History and Fabulous Bohemian Culture
Casco Viejo is a neighborhood where you will absorb history and culture just by wandering around. Every corner has something of historical significance that relates the construction of the Canal or the foundation of the Republic of Panama. Referred to interchangeably as "Casco Viejo," "Casco Antiguo" or "San Felipe," this neighborhood's stunning historical buildings are under rapid renovation, evident from the "Proximamente" or "Arco Properties" signs lining almost every street. Casco Viejo is currently an eclectic blend of elegantly restored buildings, ramshackle houses, squatters, bohemian artists, trendy restaurants, plazas, street life and original bars that is incomparable to other neighborhoods in Panama City.

Revamped

The Old Panama section or Casco Viejo is being revamped or remodeled. Now there are new restaurants to enjoy. There are also great sites to see, including presidencial palace, and the gold chapel church (iglesias del altar del oro). There is also a beautiful view of the bay and new Panama City.
