Medina of Marrakesh
Founded in 1070-1072 by the Almoravids, Marrakesh remained a political, economic, and cultural center for a long time. Its influence was felt throughout the western Muslim world, from North Africa to Andalusia. It has several impressive monuments dating from that period: the Koutoubiya Mosque, the Kasbah, the battlements, monumental doors, gardens, etc. Later architectural jewels include the Bandiâ Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Saadian Tombs, several great residences and Place Jamaâ El Fna, a veritable open-air theatre.
i like their riyad cosy atmosphere, their monuments are excellent ,but their road circulation is a little messy, and their food choises are so limited especially restaurants near the place jemaa el-fna where most of the tourists starts their visit.shopping is excellent if you know how to bargain.
Exotic Marrakech can be really great if you follow a few simple rules. Do not hire a "so called" guide off the street no matter what they promise. Government guides will take you to the Medina and you can feel relatively safe There are sidewalk "tooth pullers" who will yank a tooth out while you sit in a folding chair. There are snake charmers and acrobats and pickpockets galore. Tell your guide at the very beginning you do not want to be taken into every csrpet shop and souveniere shop where he gets a commission (that of course is added to the price of your item.) Tell him you would rather tip him well at the end of the day.
