Built in the early 13th century a few kilometres south of Delhi, the red sandstone tower of Qutb Minar is 72.5 m high, tapering from 2.75 m in diameter at its peak to 14.32 m at its base, and alternating angular and rounded flutings. The surrounding archaeological area contains funerary buildings, notably the magnificent Alai-Darwaza Gate, the masterpiece of Indo-Muslim art (built in 1311), and two mosques, including the Quwwatu'l-Islam, the oldest in northern India, built of materials reused from some 20 Brahman temples.

Qutb Minar is amazing
By Jeff, 07/08/07
What a site!! A 270 foot tall tower that was built in the 1300's that is still standing. I was quite impressed with the overall cleanliness of the gardens surrounding the tower and the ornateness of the carvings in the mosques that surround the tower. I visited in early February and while it was raining and overcast it was still an excellent trip and I'm glad that I visited.

Yes, it looks like a chimney...
By Peech, 04/13/07
Yes, it's a UNESCO World Heritage monument and historically significant. But I do have to say that it does look like a chimney, albeit a pretty one with all the carvings. The ruins of the mosques are beautiful, but a sad reminder of the Muslim destruction of native Hindu culture during its time.

Another must-see in Delhi
By Fred, 03/04/07
We saved this monument for our last day in Delhi, but in hindsight, it should probably have been among the first that we visited. Qutb Minar is a very impressive site with a magnificent atmosphere. I believe it was built around the 12 century, but it is remarkably well preserved - particularly the tower itself. The grounds themselves are also quite fascinating. Walking around the ruins really gives the visitor the impression that they are transported back to a very different time and place. Many of the buildings that are still standing offer insight into the skill and attention to detail that went into their design. We were fortunate enough to be there during the last hour of sunlight, so we were able to see Qutb Minar bathed in the surreal light that seems to universally blanket India at sunset... Note that you will need to buy your tickets across the street from the entrance. Also note that an hour is probably not enough if you like to take your time walking the grounds, so try to leave yourself at least a couple hours here.

Great historical value, but service needs to be improved
By Nguyen Thi, 09/30/06
Qutb Minar and its group of Monuments are a must-see place when you are in New Delhi. The tower is perfect. Also, great cultural and historical values lie in the ruins of old temples and tombs. However, services for tourists are poor. So, be well-prepared (camera, batteries, drinking water, etc.) before reaching the site. Otherwise you will be charged with cut-throat prices.

Great historical building
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/03/06
This is great historic building that I learnt have been made in few centuries and some emperors of the Indian origin. This is pretty unique in its king. And I believe this is a achievement to build this at that time. GREAT
