Old City of Dubrovnik

Description

The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO.

Quaint, beautiful, & historic.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/5/10
I don't think there is one thing I could say that was bad about Dubrovnik, it was more beautiful than pictures, people were very friendly and warming, the old city was de-light-ful! When I went there was a summer festival called Libertas, it was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had: money falling from the clock tower, children's choir singing, people all over the street and fireworks. And the beaches! Although rocky, they are BEAUTIFUL. Definitely go kayaking and when you walk the city, dont be afraid to duck into smaller alleyways, that's where all the good stuff's at.

Loved Dubrovnik!
By Prestige, 7/13/07
Dubrovnik was charming and beautiful. It has a wealth of interesting history and culture. We enjoyed the visit to the beautiful old town, and then took an evening boat ride to St. James Beach, where we enjoyed a delicious dinner on the beach. It was a beautiful evening, with the twinkling lights of the old town across the way. A very romantic location, and reminded me of Venice -- but much cleaner.

Dubrovnik
By Army Vet, 6/13/07
This is an amazing walled city! The highlights include the aquarium, which is built along the walls. The inside is made of stone. It's a very cool place on a hot day, but where comfortable shoes, as the floors are also stone and can be slippery. Walk around the top of the walls for the best views of the city. Other great sites include the Old Synagog, Franciscan Monastery, St Savior's Church (don't forget the fountain outside) Dubrovnik Cathedral. The churches and synagog only take a short time to see and worth stopping in, to see the uniqueness of the architecture. The Maritime Museum houses great artifacts of Dubrovnik's sea history. War Memorial shows pictures of the devestation of the 1990s war and has pictures of all those who died. It's amazing to see how quickly Dubrovnik has repaired itself. Outside there is a costumed Croatian who, for a price, will give you a certificate of citizenship for Dubrovnik. The original can be found in the Maritime Museum, so it is a true copy. You can see all of the main sites of the city easily in one day, since they are close together and most attractions are on the small side. There is some good shoppiong in Dubrovnik as well. The farmer's market has great local crafts, including many lavendar gifts. The lavendar in Croatia is some of the best in the world. You must go in the morning to the market square, as it closes early. Buy a Croatian tie, as this is the birthplace of ties and the quality is excellent. Croatian wine is not exported to the United States, so bring some home, it's delicious. The best highlight of the city is a medieval dinner cruise. If I remember right, Richard the Lionheart was stranded off the coast of Dubrovnik and when he finally landed built the main cathedral as a token for his safe passage. So, he is celebrated with this cruise. Everyone is dressed in period costume, with jugglers musicians and lots of fun. The captain of the ship, owns it himself and his wife cooks all the food on the ship. Some of the best food we ate! The tour takes you along the coast with stunning views of the city and brings you to a few of the little islands. The ship is absolutely glorious! Food in Dubrovnik is delicious! It's mostly seafood but we did try bear sausage! I'm not a huge fan of fish, but ate it regularly and it was phenominal due to the herbs and seasonings. If you are going to be in Dubrovnik for more than a day, stay at an all-inclusive resort. They are great! Lots to do, with the beaches and games and a short bus trip into the city. Try to plan a visit into the city on the days when the cruise ships are not in port, you can ask at your hotel. The city is alot busier then. Most of the ships leave in the early afternon, so you could go in the afternoon and visit into the evening for less congestion. Skip the three island tour that many small ships are offering, it's very boring on two of the islands, with nothing to do but walk around. Most Dubrovniks speak English and it's easy to get around. However, try a few phrases in Croatian and they will definitely be pleased. Your service and deals will be better. This was one of my favorite cities in Europe!

Home away from home
By fievel7, 5/2/07
The people are so warm and inviting, the food is fabulous, what can I say, that's where my family is from so I'm biased. The beaches can be rocky but the water and the sun make up for it. Try the rakija while you're there.

Amazing History! Amazing Sights!
By Dalley, 12/29/06
The old town was amazing! you could spend days there and still not see it all! I enjoyed all of the buildings and streets that were 700 - 1000 years old! The people were very nice as well. The shopping was great also. I loved it!

The amazing place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/28/06
I liked the food, atmospehere, prices, people, pristine clear waters of Adriatic...all of it. It is a great place for the whole family, but very romantic for a couple. There are lots of attractions and history to visit around. Make sure you take some trips to the near by islands.

Pleasant surprise
By SHARING, 12/24/06
Dubrovnik was included on our cruise and we had no idea what to expect. The minute the ship neared the city we know we were in for a wonderful day. Historic, clean, friendly, and very self contained for easy touring. The gelato was even better than Italy!

Will impact you in many ways
By Tim Berry, 10/10/06
I loved this city. You must take a tour along the wall and even stop for a snack in the snack cave. From the wall you will be able to see the remains of the conflict in the 1990's complete with mortar holes still allowing you to see into living rooms of residents. You must allow yourself time to explore all of the streets and side streets. You should also visit the cafe on the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic. You can sneak down the rocks and do some swimming in the pristine waters. There are some great restaurants too, but I would recommend asking for advice from the locals.

Loved Dubrovnik
By kathy, 7/23/06
Walk the wall of the city, go for a swim at the beach before or after visiting the shops. The people were friendly, prices were very reasonable. I went in July and it was very hot! But with a little more sun screen...I would do this again in a heart beat. Scenery was spectacular!
