Angkor Wat

Description

Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 sq. km, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. These include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm
By sambath, 6/6/11
Angkor is the largest religious site in the world and the soul of Khmer nation. The photo with the tree is Taprohm temple, another in small circuit not inside Angkor Thom, it's the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed. Angkor Tom was the last former capital of Khmer empire, which covers an area of 9 square km, it composes many temples in this compound, including the famous temple of Bayon with many towers and faces. Bayon's my favorite temple.

Wonderful!
By Natalie Peh, 10/8/06
The Angkor Wat was an impressive sight and as I walked towards the temples and I felt a sense of serenity and calm. The carvings on the walls hold stories that centuries old that I can only imagine. The Bayon temple are also impressive though not quite it is not quite the scale of Angkor Wat. I took lots of pictures and look at them from time to time!

Mostly perfect
By LaurelB, 10/11/06
I really enjoyed our day touring Angkor Wat and Bayon temples. I could have spent a couple days just looking around Angkor Thom City, but I was with a tour group. The only negative comment I have is not completely negative toward the city itself. There were a lot of beggars and peddlars present. I felt bad for them, but they were hard to say no to. When you said no, they persisted. It was difficult. This was a trend I saw all over Cambodia, though, so this was not isolated to Angkor Thom City. The temples were beautiful, though. I'd recommend anyone who travels to Cambodia to see them.

Takin' Back...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/16/11
Those who haven't been there shouldn't post bad comments about this place or any place... Before ever visiting Angkor, I just thought it was another very old building. But after visiting it in 2007, my thought changed completely... Of course the whole trip to Cambodia wasn't all that pleasant; ran into fraudsters, and a few rude people. But there were also friendly people, interesting transportations, good food, and a rich culture to discover. Angkor Wat was unlike anything I've come across... walking through it, I felt I was walking into the past; the beautiful structures, amazing carvings that told the story of the people in that era... The place was magnificent. The land and man made water channel that surrounded the land and the ruin. The long stone walkway and rail... leading to the most amazing ruins. I don't know how other felt. But i felt like i was there, in the past. I could see how the people lived, the culture, how the Apsara dancers came to live.... so beautiful...... I'm hoping to experience it again someday... I would recommend this place for all travelers. Advise thou, research locations and prices so you wouldn't get ripped off. Blend in, and don't make yourself look like a tourist. Stay in contact with the people you're with and the people at the hotel. Try different foods at different stands and restaurants. Meet and talk to different people to understand their lifestyle and culture better... And lastly... Enjoy yourself... It is a vacation...

Wonderful Place.
Enormous and Spectacular! Thousand Tons of Giant Stones were ideally carved into unbelievable features. I could not believe my eyes when I first arrived at the huge ancient gate. Every thing was wonderful: the sites, people and food. Anyway, food is interesting and cheap there!
