The Kasbah is a unique kind of medina, or Islamic city. It stands in one of the finest coastal sites on the Mediterranean, overlooking the islands where a Carthaginian trading-post was established in the 4th century B.C. The Kasbah contains the remains of the citadel, old mosques and Ottoman-style palaces as well as the vestiges of a traditional urban structure associated with a deep-rooted sense of community.

Amazing white Citadel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/15/08
The white casba d'Alger is the old city or fort built before the times of the Ottoman Empire, people and families still live in large communal houses called RYADs, which have a large court in the middle generally with a foutain and have trees growing in the middle of it, with 1,2 or 3 bedroom flast springing out of the coridors! absolutely beautiful Islamic renaissance architeture! TO BE SEEN!!!!

What a place! ....amazing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/11/07
La Casbah d'Alger or the old citadel is the old city from the Ottoman (Turkish) empire, its very old and dates back to the 1800's, houses are crumbling and corridors are narrow, there is a museum there. The Casbah is a world heritage protected site and you'll need a guide to venture inside or you'll get lost...I did some painting there and it was a delight for me and for the locals... Take a few films with you- you'll be using up all your pictures
