My husband, my mother-in-law and I were 20 minutes away from our trip out to board a boat off to see the Manta Rays. I received a phone call stating that they had a cancelation and that they were not going to head out our for the evening. I booked this event at least two weeks before I left over the phone. I was given strick instructions that there was 24 hour cancelation policy. Thus I had to call 24 hours ahead of time if something came up. Apparently this policy doesn't apply to the company. Not only did they cancel and not give any kind of compensation, I was directed to call another location myself and book if I still wanted to go that night. I think the way this entire situtation was handled poorly. I did make the Manta swim through another company, Jack's Dive Locker, which I highly recommend. They were considerate and well organized. I can't give them enough high marks for professionalism. Not only did they offer the Manta swim, but for $10 more you got to go out for an additional snorkel/dive plus they fed you... Hard choice...
11/13/09 I took my daughter and her 4yr old twins on the morning snorkel trip. Capt. Chris was so cordial, just fantastic! His crew went above and beyond to see that everyone was comfortable and enjoyed the experience. The twins had never been on a boat, never snorkeled or been on a surfboard. Thanks to crew member "Uncle" Carl Shephard, they did it all. He spent extra time with them, giving them the best gift of all..a wonderful lifetime memory! I've been on other snorkel boats in Kona, but NONE of them offered the personal help and extra assistance we received on the Sea Paradise. Bkfst consisted of fruit, assorted muffins and rolls. Lunch consisted of turkey and ham with assortment of cheeses and breads/rolls to choose from, beautiful green salad with feta cheese, nuts, and dried cranberries, maui chips, & cookies with sodas and/or tea or water. Buffet style, eat what you want! The day started out cloudy, but once in Kealekekua Bay at the Captain Cook Monument, the waters calmed, and the day was perfect. I saw a review saying that the customer service was bad...well let me tell you, that person must have been "looped on something"! There is not enough money to buy the gift that "Uncle Carl", Regina, and the rest of the crew and Capt. Chris offered me and my family. If you want a relaxed fun atmosphere with an "aloha" spirit, instead of a "corporate" boating expereince, then I strongly recommend taking the Sea Paradise in Kona. Judy Harrison
LONG wait sitting on the boat waiting to get into the water with the Manta's. Got sea sick sitting in the boat for an hour, after sitting at the check in location for 45 minutes. No one talks to you, everyone is just milling around waiting to go out snorkeling. Unprofessional. For what you pay for this activity, they should be much more customer oriented.
Rich Kersten of Sea Paradise singlehandedly made our vacation to Kailua-Kona on the big island of Hawaii the all-time best week we've ever had. To say it was fun would be like saying Hawaii is pretty - an amazing understatement! I would totally reccomend it to others for many reasons, such as: clean, safe boats & equipment, friendly & knowledgeable staff, tremendous value, and awesome sights & experience.
We originally scheduled only one trip with Sea Paradise, but we had such a great time, we asked what other trips they might have so we could use them again. The first trip we took was a snorkelling trip onboard a large catamaran that took us to Kealakekua Bay (where capt. Cook monument is) and Red Hill. Both places were amazing dive sites/sights! But it wasn't just the stuff we saw that made this trip special. Both my boyfriend and I are very experience divers who have been snorkelling and scuba diving all over the world, so just being able to dive would not rank it as such a great experience...what made Sea Paradise so special was the time we spent on their boats! The people who run the operations there are spectacular. The food they served on the dive boats was so much better than I've had on other boats, and they had so many drink choices too! The captain gave a fairly detailed commentary at each site, and the dive master knew the names of all the fish and animals we saw in the water. We had such a good time we had to book them again.
Our second experience with Sea Paradise was a scuba charter. Sea Paradise goes to about 30 different sites all along south Kona in the the same areas we went snorkelling, because the visibility is way better in the south and it's not so crowded withother divers. Check out my pictures!
Our third experience was also scuba diving, and we trolled for some fish on our way back in ...and we caught a 17 lb wahoo!!!
For our second to last night, we went on Sea Paradise's signature snorkel trip, an evening swimming with manta rays! Oh My Gawd, it was absolutley amazing to watch these huge 5, 6, & 7 foot sea creatures glide around us eating plankton. They are so graceful and beautiful, and I never would have known about this trip if it weren't for Rich. We just couldn't get enough of him, so even though it was our last day, we booked one more shallow scuba dive (we could only go to 60 ft.), and it was spectacular, as usual. On the way back in, the boat encountered a pod of dolphins who rode our pressure wake...one of them hit my foot as I was sitting on the bow. There must have been 20 spinner dolphins surrounding our boat, so we stopped and jumped in the water to swim with them, but they were too busy going out to hunt...they were gone before we got our snorkel gear on. But they swam with our boat for about 5 minutes which was awesome!
Anyhow, Sea Paradise is the way to go if you want to do any scuba diving or snorkeling in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
