Fratellini (I)

Description

Florentines have been savoring the delicate wines and satisfying sandwiches from this eatery since 1875. Now run by a husband and wife duo, the place boasts of a wine rack tucked 5 feet deep into the back wall, as well as some of the best panini to be found in the city. A choice place for students, tourists and locals alike, this is one of the few fiaschetterias left from the days gone by. The sandwiches cost around EUR2-3, while the wine may be sipped at EUR1-2 a glass. Being rather small, the queues can be pretty long. So push up to the counter and watch your sandwich being prepared from fresh and marinated ingredients as you sip your wine. Most folks prefer to eat their snacks in the quiet, traffic-free zone just outside the little shop.

Shhh....don't tell anyone
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/13/09
It is too late for that. On a visit to Florence a few weeks ago, I stopped by Il Fratelinni for a panino and a glass of wine. It was a bit busier than when I was in Florence three years ago. But, the panini and wine are just as good as ever. And, the ambiance is..........instead of standing inside at a bar you either stand free, against the wall, or sit on the sidewalk with your feet in the gutter. This blurb about Il Fratellini states that it is now owned by husband and wife. Maybe, but I have never seen the wife. Its alwasy two fellow behind the counter, one doing panini and one doing the wine. Always assumed they are the owners.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND THIS
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/20/08
I think the only reason people aren't writing about this place, is because they don't want there to be longer lines. HANDS DOWN best sandwich shop in the world. I would pick it for my last meal. I wish I could go there now and have roasted red peppers and the most delicious tuna ever on the best roll. I wish one would open in NYC!! Anyone want to start a franchise?

Do you want to get into the thick of things for lunch?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/13/06
I Fratellini is an experience - not to be savoured, but to be experienced! Stand-up lunch out-of-doors of succulent sandwiches, preferably accompanied by an adequate glass of vino that you can place on a numbered shelf to prevent its loss! There is a varied choice of fillings on rosetto buns(like mini kaisers), and don't be afraid to try the raw salsiccia on a pannino! Live a little! I could say more great things to convince a traveller to visit I Fratellini (and they are Fratellini!), But just go and enjoy the surprise!
