Tastings - A Restaurant, Wine Shop & Wine Bar
When Tastings started in 1990 it was the only fully integrated Wine Shop/ Wine Bar/ Restaurant on the East Coast. About twenty years later, there is still only a handful of establishments in the U.S. such as Tastings. Besides being an outstanding wine shop in its own right as well as a fine restaurant, Tastings offers a large selection of wines by the glass. Wines are offered in flights for experimentation with a meal for a modest fee over the retail price of wines in the shop. Tastings' restaurant serves simple, direct cuisine that allows each customer a gustatory and educational experience in a friendly but professional fine restaurant.
One of the great stops for true oenophiles on the East Coast. The owner/operator, Bill Curtis, has a knowledge of wine that is rarely equaled in this country. While he is publicly acclaimed one of the great experts on Oregon Pinot Noirs, few know that his knowledge of French and German wines is unrivaled outside New York City. I have bought many cases over the years from his wine shop that adjoins the restaurant, and Bill has never failed to lead me to excellent and sometimes quite unique wine at a very fair price. The restaurant specializes in food that is meant to accompany fine wines, and he does a brilliant job of that as well. I would never have know that soft shell crabs from Maryland went so well with certain French whites. But I sure do now. Very much recommended. Stop in at the bar if you're in a hurry and just try a few half glasses of his current favorites, and I guarantee you'll make it through the night.
Tastings was one of the worst dining experiences we have ever had. The food and wine were very good but the service was so horrible we left no tip. Our server rolled her eyes at us and acted visibly annoyed when we asked about our food after waiting almost 2 hours, and she blamed us for not telling her sooner that we had a concert to go to later and needed to hurry the service along.
