In the Columbia Pike region of Arlington, Matuba offers a traditional and reliable Japanese menu. The intimate dining area is casual with traditional touches. Japanese prints adorn the walls and blond wood furnishings add an air of authenticity. This is among the most reliable Japanese restaurants in the Washington area. Sushi, tempura and grilled delicacies are among the mainstays. Some of the house specialties are the rainbow roll, with a variety of fish wrapped together, and a shrimp and scallops entree. An additional restaurant is located in Bethesda.

I did the lunch buffet. The selection was not very good. Only two types of hand rolls were offered, and only one of them after I asked. Only one type of roll was ever set out. The salmon nigiri was good but the ahi was hit or miss. The first 2 pieces I had were great but later it was fishy. If you want to stuff yourself with only salmon, ahi, and ebi nigiri as well as spicy salmon rolls this place is fine but nothing special.

If only you sweet bowing people stopped killing whales I could digest my raw fish a little easier....

Nice neighborhood sushi place for quick and cheaper sushi! Plus the welcoming you get when you enter is always nice as everyone says hello to you!

This is our all-time favorite Japanese, conveniently located in the old part of Bethesda where one can still park fairly easily. The fish is always fresh and excellent, with plenty of variety. The kids love the Ramune (Japanese soda). And the buffet in the back is a great way to over-eat on a more limited selection, and is a great deal for big appetites!

In terms of ambience and the sushi itself, this place reminds us some very good sushi places in Japan. On good nights the clientele represents a sampling of the more adventurous and well-traveled elements of the neighborhood. It has a fun, local feeling

Funky little place with the feel of a long narrow closet. Terrific food - sushi, tempura, teriyaki, etc. Never had a bad meal here. I love this place.
