14 February 2008.
Over priced and the food was not satisfying. We had the tasting, consisting of 5 extremely little dishes. Someone would come around and place a knife and fork, then someone else would deliver the dish. A senior waiter would come over and tell us what we got. Then someone would come around and take up all the silverware. Finally, someone would come over and fill the water glasses. This scenario would be repeated five times, every 10 minutes. This is not a place you would want to take someone and have an intimate conversation with, since there was a waiter constantly at your table. However, my wife liked this constant attention.
The best part for me was the beef roast, which was mouth watering and had a great flavor. The accompanying NY strip steak was stringy and had little flavor other than the searing on the outside. The lobster was under cooked. The pasta with a cream/cheese/truffle oil had a good cheese flavor, but the sauce was too thin and there was no hint of truffles. My wife did not like the pasta dish. The scallops had a mustard sauce that overpowered the scallops. The chocolate bomb (their words, not mine) was made with dark chocolate and was less than mediocre. After spending nearly $300 for the two of us, we stopped by Whole Foods to pick up something satisfying.
I strongly suggest L'Auberge Chez Francois (Great Falls). The food has been consistently good over the last 10 years. I was surprised to also hear people at the next table the same comparison---with the same conclusion.
