Fresh, friendly & incredible value in Mclean.
The best overall sushi in the Washington D.C. area is to be found on the second floor of a very plain-looking building in Mclean that looks more like an office complex than host to a warm and friendly gem of a neighborhood restaurant. It's packed with Japanese people on the weekends and has a steady of stream of regulars who understand that good sushi and sashimi does not mean you have to have be in a trendy location with a overdesigned high-octane interior to be legit. This place is definitely not going to win any interior design awards, but it should win the award for the most friendly service, best value and freshest fish in the area. If you are sashimi fan like me, the sashimi lunch special is an incredible value that is 85% of a dinner portion for 50% of the price. But forget the price, it would still be worth it at twice the price any where else. The spicy tuna hand rolls have the perfect balance of flavor and texture that melt in your mouth vs. other restaurants that usually just add some commercial hot sauce on top and call it their spicy version. Come early on weekends, it's usually packed. A better idea, especially on a cold blustery night, and for those who have experienced the simple ambience of rural Japan, is to self-hijack your normal dreary commute on the jammed DC Beltway and head to this cozy establishment, order a good Japanese beer and let your frustrations melt away while you take in a little bit of Japan off the beaten path in Northern Viriginia.
