Canton, located just a few minutes to the Northeast of downtown, is the most recent in a fairly long line of revitalized Baltimore neighborhoods. As such, it has become home to young professionals and urban hipsters. One of the favorite hangouts of this energetic crowd is this small, friendly Mexican restaurant that offers enormous portions of good food at modest prices. The portabello mushroom and spinach quesadilla is terrific, National Bohemian beer is exceptionally cheap, and at least a dozen portraits of Elvis grace the walls.
I went here about 2 months ago for the first time with some friends to have a few drinks and maybe get some food. As soon as we set down at our table our waitress told us that we had to buy food or go sit at the bar. Of course we are new to these rules so we decided to order drinks while we figured out what we would eat. She immediately got an attitude with us as if we were stealing the table because we didn't order food right away. She was incredibly rude the entire night to the point where I even had to ask her did she have a problem with us. At the end of the night I realized that she was being so rude because you have to pay automatic gratuity after 10pm. We paid our bill and I talked to the manager about her behavior. I should have asked to speak to a manager immediately, but I know better next time. I don't know if that waitress is still there, because that experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I've never gone back.
Great food, enormous portions, good prices, and an eclectic hometown Baltimore atmosphere. What more could one ask for? Try the Jambalaya special. It's a HUGE mound of food, completely covering the plate. Absolutely delicious! If you like it spicy, you have about 6 or 7 different hot sauces on the table, with varying degrees of heat. Will definitely be coming back!
This place is several miles outside of the city and it is probably worth the drive. We got the chicken nachos with just Chicken & Cheese (we are picky) and they were unbelievably good! Then for lunch, we got the chicken taquitos (kind of spicy) for $7 and a beef taco for $8. They serve a single taco as lunch because it is a very large soft tortilla (they do not have hard tacos). If you are looking for chopped-up beef like Taco Bell or Don Pablo's, this is not the place. They use large chunks of roast-like beef (very tender and tasty). The ambiance is very cool in there and there is lots of older sports items on the wall. The bar also seemed very live, crazy & fun. Parking was an issue - we had to park several blocks away and walk. There are also a ton of one-way streets in this area, making it very annoying to find a parking space. Overall, the food was very good, the prices are ok, the ambiance is awesome and the parking was not good.
The ambiance, or setting is great. And you expect the food to be great, but it is only ordinary. And they serve too much of this ordinary food on the plate. They need to invest in a real chef, and serve better food for me to go back there. Unless it is for just a drink, and nachos.
If you're looking for a place with good food, decent prices, and a laid back atmosphere, then Nacho's is the place. Try the Chicken Chesapeake, a Natty Boh, and, if you've brought some friends (or you're adventurous), a hub cap Margarita. Friendly service, and don't forget to say hi to the Softball team on Wednesdays!
