Proving that good things do indeed come in small packages, Matsuri serves succulent sushi and traditional Japanese cuisine. The tastefully decorated dining and Sushi bar area is tinybut thanks to a friendly staff, and nice lighting, that atmosphere is one of relaxed intimacy. Sushi fans will delight not only in the vast selection of rolls and pieces, but in the absolutely first rate ingredients, and the beautiful presentation. The cooked selections are also wonderful, featuring light but savory sauces and lots of crisp vegetables.
Matsuri, located in the heart of the Federal Hill bar scene, was a surpirising find for me. The atmosphere is immediately reminiscent of any small sushi bar in the heart of Tokyo. Room is at a premium, and space is efficiently utilized, offering a quaint ambiance. The chefs are very skilled in creating delicious, creative, and well presented dishes. There are deviations from norm on the menu to satisfy even the pickiest eater (tempura chicken with basil...), but all of the traditional pieces are available. Price is aon the high side of average, but the cost is more than worthwhile for this overall taste and enviromental experience.
Which means I like very much in japanese. Matsuri is a local favorite not only because its so very close but for its tremendous menu with its artful sushi and sashimi platter and traditional Japanese fares such as tempura and Teryaiki dishes. The price, service and ambiance are second to none!
We're huge sushi addicts, and we try just about every place. Matsuri has some of the best sushi in town as well as consistently happy and attentive staff, fun atmosphere and convenient location. Make sure to try the Matsuri Roll- spicy tuna with tobiko. They do spicy tuna the right way- no tekka maki with some red spice added like some. The other rolls are also excellent, as is the traditional fare. You can't go too wrong and this small but wonderful Japanese restaurant!
Located in the Federal Hill district of Baltimore, Matsuri is a wonderful place for to enjoy sushi and other Japanese cuisine. The main fixture of the first floor is the sushi bar. Tables flank both sides of the bar, and the area bussles with activity. The second floor provide a quieter atmosphere, including authentic Japanese-style seating. There are Japanese art pieces, photographs and other treasures adding to the decor, including the back passages and the staircase. The staff is courteous and friendly. The food is excellent and very fresh. The menu is extensive and it caters to vegertarians and meat-eaters alike. This is a great place for groups or a quiet dinner for two. I recommend this place to anyone that wants excellent Japanese cuisinea and wants to experience some of the Baltimore nightlife.
